Will never return!
We had been referred to Dr. Sheats for a root canal for our 9-year-old because she needed sedation because of a fear. Shortly after we got there, she was taken back, but I was not allowed to go with her. Less than 10 minutes later, I hear a piercing scream and crying, and I was still not allowed to go back there. I was finally allowed to go back, and she was shaking and huge tears going down her cheeks. The assistant was speaking rudely to her, and told me I could go stand in the corner. I continued to hold my daughter's hand. The proceeded to put another needle of (I'm assuming) numbing stuff in her gum and she screamed, again. I told the lady and dentist I had wanted her to be sedated. They rudely told me she was receiving double what they normally give. I told them I didn't think it was working, and they made me feel like I didn't know what i was talking about. The dentist was arrogant, as was the assistant. They didn't care what I had to say, and my daughter was very uncomfortable. The dentist started to drill and my daughter screamed at the top of her lungs. It seemed as though she was feeling what he was doing. Finally, the dentist said we would have to come back because she wouldn't calm down. He told her she would have to go through all that pain again because she was behaving that way (what dentist says that?!). The nurse made a comment about me being on Tenncare, for which I said we had insurance through my work, and she later apologized for making that statement.
My daughter's experience was quite traumatic for her. she said she never wanted to go to a dentist again. I don't think they numbed her topically before administering the novacaine.
I found another dentist who did IV sedation. They put a gas mask on her before giving the IV, and she IMMEDIATELY became "loopy" and doesn't remember a thing. Therefore, I can only come to the conclusion that they never turned on the gas for her at Sheats or they did something wrong. There is no way they had it on double the dose and she was the way she was, especially after knowing it does work on her with just a small amount a few days later.
I will never return to Sheats. The assistant and Dr. Sheats were very arrogant with no manners to me or my daughter. The assistant was also quite rude to fellow employees, and I was embarrassed for them, too. I felt like they treated her like a rag doll or animal... Never again.
