Celebrated guitarist and founding member of the rock band Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, lost his longtime battle with throat cancer on October 6, 2020. This year alone, an estimated 53,260 adults in the United States will be diagnosed with oral and oropharyngeal cancer. When this type of cancer is detected early (typically during a regular dental visit) the overall 5-year survival rate is 84%.

Although Van Halen often theorized that his cancer was linked to the metal guitar picks he would hold between his teeth, experts are more likely to agree with the American Cancer Society’s research which demonstrates the role tobacco and alcohol use plays in oral cancer. Click here to read more.
