Hi everyone,
I had all four wisdom tooth removed 3 weeks ago. I had severe jaw pain few days after surgery and the dentist told me i had dry socket.

For the past few days, I have had lot of ear ache on right side of my ear. I was wondering if this is normal symptom or something I should be concerned about? Did anyone have this problem and how long did it last? I went to see the dentist yesterday and he told me that this is normal however, it doesnt make sense to me. Why would it cause pain to ears if new tissues are growing in my mouth.

I just hope this clears up soon. its really hard to sleep at night because i feel like my ear beating similar to the heart beats. its weird. i just hope this normal and nothing i need to worry about like dentist said.

Thx in advance

Wisdom tooth extractions are pretty intense and maxillary wisdoms are rather close in relation to the ear area. Dry sockets are painful because the clot in the extraction area is gone and bone is exposed and its like losing a scab on the skin the clot is the scab healing the site, keeping the clot requires you following care instructions completly. Your dentist should have you come in for a evaluation if the discomfort continues. good luck

Thanks for reply. The dentist said that this is normal because new tissues are growing in. However, I have not heard of anyone with earache after having dry socket so I was wondering if I need to be worried about this or not. Did anyone have earache after wisdom tooth surgery? This has been going on for past few days especially when i am in bed.

I came on the internet because I had a left top wisdom tooth extracted at the dentist about a month ago, it healed well and uneventfully, but I am now experiencing an intermittent stabbing pain in my left ear. Is this what you are referring to???? I don't have the poundng in my ear, but I did before the tooth came out!

Hello
I had all four wisdom (dont see whats so wize about them...lol) teeth out a few months ago. I did not develop dry sockets , But I also had earaches. It was not fun , But I found that lying on a heating pad on the side that hurt helped alot, in fact I slept on it.
good luck

I had the bottom right wisdom tooth pulled about three weeks ago. I've been fighting a dry socket ever since then. It went away after the first week, but came back at the end of the second week and has been painfully with me ever since.
The oral surgeon keeps packing it with this medicated stuff, but it doesn't seem to get better like it did after the first week. It throbs real bad and causes a sharp pain in my ear.
I've been putting a heating pad on it, and it seems to ease the pain a little. That gets the blood flowing back in the socket and it's the loss of blood that causes the pain. The pain seems to worsen when I lay down as well.
I guess women are more prone then men, and bottom teeth are more prone then top. Also, if you are on birth control, you are twice as likely to get a dry socket.
All I can say is hang in there, I'm sure the pain will go away eventually.

Missy P left good advice. I have noticed a slightly higher incidence in women, and almost universally in lower third molars. The cause is usually disurption of the blood clot, often due to vigorous rinsing or cleaning of the extraction site.

I do want to add that dry socket paste is an old remedy that dentists use to ease the pain of a dry socket. While healing time doesn't improve, gentle packing of the socket w/ DSP (on iodoform gauze) on a daily basis offers significant relief. Sorry, you can't do this at home.

I am having the same problem right now. No dry socket but still have an earache that will not go away. The doc gave me more antibiotics which I thought was helping but the earache is comming back now. How long did it take for your earache to go away?

I had a lower wisdom tooth removed over two weeks ago (24/5) and had I guess almost every complication yoou can think of. Dry socket (just heald yesterday), earache that last and lasts, two days after operation I've got high temperature and a very sore throat. It turned out i managed to get angina - the big one. Today i'm lying in bed with sore throat, a head like an elephant (not swolen at all but heavy, achy and full of green stuff that just continues to come out in huge quantaties...) I kough like a dragon with bad cold. Antibiotics did no good, the blod tests did show some improvement but i still fell lousy. Luckily i have next week off so I could finaly go better. Keep the good spirit!

Uros,

If you have green stuff oozing from your wound you really should have the dentist or doctor keep a close eye on it. Dental infection could possibly become very serious. If the antibiotic you are having is not working you need another one. You don't want your infection to become chronic and turn into osteomyelitis. Wish you a speedy recovery.

I had all four removed on June 6th. For four days everything went well. Had a checkup and all was good. Then, all hell broke loose on the bottom right--pain, ear ache, more pain, crying (which didn't help) bedrest (which helped some but was getting old) and returned to os who told me it was food. It wasn't. I have syrnged carefully, taken all of my vicodin, continue to take 800 mg of ibuprofin and to rest and apply heat. It's now been 13 days and it still hurts quite a bit. However, I've read some of these discussions and I guess it could be worse--although this is pretty bad. It hurts (a lot) and I'm starting to feel like it's all in my head (who lives in pain for over two weeks--more if you count the week of impaction before the extraction?). Can't wait to get better!!!

Your pain is characteristic of a dry socket. The patient is comfortable for several days post op, then "all hell breaks loose." It's nearly always a lower wisdom tooth.

The cause is generally premature sloughing of the blood clot. Syringe? Disruption of the extraction site can cause a dry socket. Leave it alone.

hello
I had an extraction of 5th molar on monday. Wednesday I woke up to severe pounding in my ear and jaw. I recognized the pain of a dry socket (I seem to get them each time I have an extraction). I do not want to go back to the dentist. My question is, how long will the pain last? Should it stop when the area fills in or do I just go back to the dentist for those packings which to me are painful and don't offer that much relief.

This problem requires a professional, clinical diagnosis. Please return to the dentist for a follow up.

A "5th molar?" That's extraordinary!

No, I'm not making fun. I'm pointing out the importance of appropriate professional care. A message board has limitations.

Dear Missy P:
I am experiencing the same exact situation that you had, bottom right area, three weeks post surgery, dry socket, medicated packing not helping; i'm just curious as to how long the pain actually lasted for you. and if you have any pointers to ease the pain if you could let me know, that would be great! thanks.

I had my last two wisdom teeth removed six days ago. About three days ago the pain in my mouth got much better but I noticed my jaw began to hurt a great deal. This pain just seemed to get worse. Not only does my ear hurt (like a bad ear infection) but all along my jaw line on that side up to my front teeth.
The thing that concerns me is that I cant open my mouth all the way. It is like its locked and I can only open it about half way if that. Not just painful,I literally cant open my mouth all the way. (Some might say that is a good thing lol) Hopefully it will losen up soon.

Noone can find anything but the headaches are getting to bad to stand it. I never had headaches before the operation

I have the same problem. I went to the oral surgeon and he told me I had MFD (myofacial pain disfunction syndrome). Don't worry it sounds worse than it is. What happens is that when your wisdom teeth are removed there is a tremendous release of pressure off of your other teeth. Your other teeth need to settle and move thus changing your bite. When you clench down on this new bite your muscles aren't used to this bite and create a pain in the jaw muscles that run up past the ear and as far as the side of your head. This pain is wrongly determined as an earache or a headache. Go to you dentist and ask about MFD. I was prescribed with an anti-inflamatory and (most importantly) a muscle relaxer. The muscle relaxer helps for you to relax and not clench your teeth and for your jaw to relax and adjust to the new bite. Also use a hot compress and work at the knot in the jaw. Do these things and you will feel much better in no time!!!!!

I had my bottom 2 wisdom teeth removed 72 hours ago. The surgery went well, and since then the pain has been tolerable. I have been extremely careful not to get dry socket. I have been taking the amoxicillin religiously. My ears have felt plugged up, but do not hurt. The only problem is that yesterday my glands became very swollen and my throat became very sore. I could barely talk. Every time I would breathe in, it felt like I was breathing in dust, and I would choke and start coughing. The coughing was so bad that I was worried that I would rip my stitches. This morning, I started coughing up greenish/yellowish mucus. This can't be normal. Do I have some kind of infection? Or will this go away in time? I have a few more days until I go back to the doctor. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Oh dear. Now I'm really concerned, because I had my wisdom teeth pulled about a month ago, and have had intermittent probs with my bottom right ever since. I've had to take ibuprofen pretty much since the surgery. Went back to the dentist a week ago and he pulled out a bone fragment, but it hasn't helped. For several weeks now I have had pain in my ear, gland and chest like you described, all on the right side (even my lung), like I have inhaled something bad. Hope someone will post something that says this sounds familiar. Guess I'll be making a trip to the dr.

Hi Neo - you asked whether anyone has had this problem, specifically the sensation of the ear beating in a similar way to the heart, after wisdom teeth extraction. I can confirm that I had all four wisdom teeth extracted about 3 months ago and have just started to perceive an erratic beating in my left ear drum accompanied by a blocked up or full sensation behind the ear. I have a working hypothesis that it does not coincide exactly with the heartbeat, that it is most intense in the mornings or when I sit still, and that it is not just a sound perceived but an actual motion of something in the ear (a kind of throbbing expansion.)

Cheers,
Malcolm

My husband had 4 wisdom teeth extracted 6 days ago. He has stopped sleeping at night because the pain in one side of his lower jaw is so intense. Sleeping pills and tylenol don't work. A return trip to the oral surgeon didn't help eother. The surgeon only informed us that all appeared to be healing fine and that my husband should take whatever pain medication he needs in the mean time. I really don't think this guy comrehends the level of pain my husband is feeling.

I had one Wisdon Tooth out 6 days ago too. Have been in constant pain since although I have been able to mitigate the pain with Iuprofen and thankfully have been able to sleep.

What concerns me is that the level of pain shows no sign of diminishing.

Best wishers to your husband I can sympathise

Bill,

You raise an important consideration. In 30 years of practice, I would tell patients "If Tylenol, aspirin or ibuprofen does not make you reasonably comfortable, CALL ME."

I just got 4 wisdom teeth out 7 days ago. I didn't have much pain except for the first day, which was a double dose of Vicodin day. I got my stiches out yesterday (the 6th day) and now I have a hard bulbous mass, about the size of a small pea, in my gum right near the socket. It is a little uncomfortable pain-wise. Not too bad. I was just curious what this is. Also when will I be able to eat normally again. I am sick of mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs.

From what I read in the paper, many people would kill for "mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs."

Be glad for a little discomfort and continued healing.

I also had 3 wisdom teeth removed about 6 days ago, 1 upper and 2 bottoms, the next 2 days went by fine, but on the 3rd day i had some bad pain in the bottom right on my mouth and pressure in my right ear and also caused me headhaches.

All this is pretty normal the doctor told me it could happen before the surgery and he packed some stuff in the wound and i must admit it feels better now.

But what worries me is that my throat is swollen big time, right under my chin uge lump, and it prevents me from eating anything thicker than soup or yogourt, the doctor gave me antibiotics but after 3 days on them i still dont see any improvement.

Whats also worrying is that the doctor told me he never saw that kind of infection/swollen because of wisdom teeth removal.

How long does it take for antibiotics to kick in? anyone seen this before?

If you haven't already done so, please get a second opinion from an oral & maxillofacial surgeon.

Well since it is my throat that is affected and that a maxillofacial surgeon already told me that he never saw this reaction before, should i waste my time with seing another maxillofacial or just plain go to the emergency room at my nearest hospital?

Since the swelling developed after dental surgery, I would personally see an oral & maxillofacial surgeon. If you feel comfortable in a second opinion, you may choose to consult with someone new. Perhaps the surgeon you have already seen may want an "updated" look at you, especially if your condition has worsened since you last presented for an exam.

"Big time" swellings of the head and neck demand immediate attention.

Thanks for the advice i have a appointment with the same surgeon tomorrow morning, we will see what he has to say, will keep you updated.

The antibiotics he gave me didnt improve my situation so far and its been 4 days on them now, they actually are very hard on me.

Well it's either the antibio's or the lack of food or maybe both, but i get upset stomachs, no energy what so ever, diziness, trouble focusing ( cant drive), and extremely dry mouth.
