Well just came back from my surgeon, and what is causing the swelling is an infection.

My bottom right tooth was pretty deep and the rooth must have been connected to a canal of some sort and by removing the tooth it caused a infection that traveled threw that canal and lodge itself underneth my chin (throat) and basicly swollen up like hell.

He confirmed this by taking a look at the location of that tooth and by pressing on the huge lump in my throat and voila, huge amout of puss came out from the location of that bottom wound.

So he basicly told me to keep pressing on the lump to evacuate the most puss i could on my own and keep taking the antibiotics, and to go see him again in 2 days, he told me he might have to make an incision in my throat and install a drain plug to evacuate the infection, im not really looking foward to that

All this for a stupid tooth, geez

Shayne, hey! I am experiencing the exact same thing. I had my 2 lower wisdom teeth out on Thurs (today is Sunday) and there is major swelling on my neck. It is really worrying me. Send me an email if you wish to talk: bigkahunaps2@yahoo.com
I guess this is just an infection of some sort....

I just wanted to give a quick overview of a problem I had after extraction. It sounds little similar to some of your problems. I had one tooth extracted and the following afternoon I started experiencing horrible pain. I was taking three ibuprofen every few hours and still crying in pain all day and all night. I had the tooth extracted on Wednesday and returned on Friday morning. The dentist said "everything is fine, you shouldn't be in pain". Well Friday I took some of the prescription ibuprofen he gave me. Friday night, still crying. I honestly thought he had fractured my jaw, I was in so much pain. My ear hurt, my head hurt... it was from my forehead to my jaw hurt worse than any pain I had ever felt. I returned to the dentist on Saturday, after I called literally crying. He said that he could numb me up to stop the pain. I was quite shocked, since I figured pain was my bodies way of telling me something was wrong. I decided to seek a second opinion and I'm glad I did. Turns out it was TMJ... I hadn't noticed, but the side of my face felt like a brick it was so tight. I was put on Lortab and applied moist heat. I massaged the area a couple of times a day and within a few days, the pain subsided. I went through a bottle of ibuprofen. I cannot believe still to this day that someone's professional opinion was in inject a numbing solution into my jaw for that. I'm glad I didn't go that route. I was told that I could have done further damage if I were numbed up. Anyone heard of such a thing??

I just had 2 upper and 1 lower removed a week ago. I had very bad jaw swelling and I am experiencing pain, earache and headaches. I seem to be able to relieve it with Ibuprofen, Percocet does nothing for me. My jaw is not able to open it does feel locked. My question is why is, Is this normal? For my mouth to only open so much? Oh and I have no sensation on my chin, I still feel numb. I'm afraid to go back to the oral surgeon. I don't want any more pain, I still have bruising on my neck and chin from the surgery.

Hi! I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted over two weeks ago. I can honestly say I have been in more pain from this "minor procedure" than after my C-section. And though things appear to be gradually improving, I too have had earaches and jaw pain. And not only that, but I still have numbness as well. My oral surgeon told me this was due to my tooth being so close to the nerve, but that eventually I would get the feeling back there. Anyone know anything about this? Personally this entire experience has been one I could have done without!

I have had 2 wisdom teeth out recently, the first one was from the bottom right which healed quickly with no problems or side effects but the second tooth i had removed about 4 days ago which was from the bottom left has left me in a lot of pain. I am on some fairly strong painkillers at present and because of pain starting from my front teeth to my left ear.

Hello everyone! I had my four wisdom teeth surgically removed under general anesthesia on the 17th of nov. I spent three weeks reading this MB before making up my mind to go to the OR. Everything went well after surgery. I was prescribe Percocet every four hours for pain. My face was very swollen as well as throat. I appplied ice pack on both sides of my face. I was unable to sleep at all. The pain in my jaw was severe. I could'nt open my mouth completely. I had unbearable headaches and nausea. After being without pain relief, I went to my local ER, I was given Demedrol IV for pain and Amoxicillin,I was admitted to the hospital and started on Unasyn, an antibiotic, by I.V. for three days. After Discharge I was Much Better I was able to eat regular food and Finish my Amoxicillin at home. I have a F/U Appt with the Oral Surgeon in 2 weeks.
Thank you so much for your advice and testimonial on this MB. Happy Holidays.

The 2 wisdom teeth on my right side were removed on 12/20. I had some minor pain, but I was able to to excedrin and it has healed nicely. I then had the bottom left side wisdom tooth removed on 12/27, and have been in nothing but horrible pain ever since. I've taken excedrin, and I've tried using oragel to numb the pain, but it persists. It's a throbbing pain on the left side that starts from the front of my teeth and jaw all the way to the left side of my throat. It hurts to swallow, to bite down, to open my mouth all the way. I can't sleep, it's driving me nuts! I'm going to call the dentists office today, hopefully I can get some answers.

Beth,

Please contact the dentist immediately! All conscientious dentists provide after hour emergency care, or a referral for their patients of record.

The recent extraction might be a dry socket (most commonly lower wisdom teeth). There is an effective paste that may be (professionally) placed to ease the pain, along with a prescription for pain medication.

I do hope you feel better.

How long is the blood clot supposed to last ? I had both lower wisdom teeth removed 3 days ago, and I am worried about disturbing the extraction site. Both sites have a blood clot, how soon can I brush safely ?

Please rinse gently, but do not disturb the extraction sites. You may brush and floss your other teeth.

A "5th molar?" That's extraordinary!

No, I'm not making fun. I'm pointing out the importance of appropriate professional care. A message board has limitations.

Hi,

Oops. I made the mistake of hitting submit before replying on my last post. Sorry. Just wanted to tell you that although I have never had a dry socket (I am 54) when I was 21, I did have 5 molars removed during sedated oral surgery in a hospital. My cousin who was teaching Dental Assisting at the time wanted to bring her students to watch the surgery as a 5th Molar is so rare.

Just wanted to let you know you aren't the only one with a 5th molar. Hope the dry socket has healed.

Mary

I feel a little bad posting here, since for the most part my four extractions went ok. I had a few days of very bad pain and dizziness, but the inflammation has mostly cleared and reducing pain meds helped the dizziness.

However, last night my right ear started to bother me. I'm concerned because I have a scuba diving trip planned in fifteen days. I never thought to ask whether there would be restrictions on my ability to scuba dive. Is there any way to know whether it will be okay, or will I have to wait until I am underwater to know?

Thanks.

Had 4 wisdoms pulled 3 weeks ago...For the first 2-3 days it wasn't too bad. Then the pain got a lot worse. I am not one to take a lot of meds but I jumped at those hydrocodone I was prescribed. They make you feel out of it but basically blocks all pain. Now my mouth is almost completely healed but my right ear hurts especially when I swallow.

Anti-inflammatory drugs help the body to heal by reducing the natural "over reaction" to circumstances it deems threatening (such as surgery).

Unless there is a medical contraindication to taking a medication, most OTC drugs are safe and effective, including aspirin and ibuprofen.

For the past few days, I have had lot of ear ache on right side of my ear. I was wondering if this is normal symptom or something I should be concerned about? Did anyone have this problem and how long did it last? I went to see the dentist yesterday and he told me that this is normal however, it doesnt make sense to me. Why would it cause pain to ears if new tissues are growing in my mouth.

I just hope this clears up soon. its really hard to sleep at night because i feel like my ear beating similar to the heart beats. its weird. i just hope this normal and nothing i need to worry about like dentist said.

Thx in advance

i had my wisdom teeth removed about a week ago , and its all going fine , ive had no problems with them at all.

i was reading a munber of posts and was looing at the pain relife people where taking they take asprin and ibufen etc , i would of thought that theses medications would slow the healin process as they thin the blood, asprin is given to heart attack patients and ibufen it said to have the same properties. it this true? if so what can you take for pain relife

If you have not already done so, please see an oral surgeon. There's no reason dentistry should be such a difficult experience.

On 2/8/06 I had an impacted wisdom tooth and the two adjacent molars extracted due to absess from the impaction. Since then I ha\/e experienced nothing but pain. While the OS and DDS are sympathetic and prescribed lortab, I ha\/e exhausted my lortab prescriptions due to the se\/erity of the pain.

Originally, the DDS felt I might be experiencing a dry socket, the OS did not agree seeming to think the pit was too shallow from the wisdom tooth site to be a dry socket, but prescribed the self injecting paste that I used religiously. While burning and tasting awful it did cause my mouth to get relief from the numbing it caused.

Now I am in my third week, after the extraction and subsequent bone remo\/al that occured a week post surgery - there was a piece of bone that erupted through my gumline that needed to be 'clipped' off- and the DDS is saying the excrutiating ear pain and shooting pain down my jawline is the ner\/e 'healing'. My concern is I am being told to use Ibuprofen - which I started using post surgery in conjunction with the lortab- and nothing else.

The DDS doesn't seem to understand that the pain is intolerable. I am in so much pain that it makes me think I am losing my mind. Sounds silly - but I don't know how else to describe it. The back pit has closed o\/er completely, and she examined me again today and felt it was 'healing nicely' - and that the additional piece of bone that I thought was exposed was a scab and was simply sensiti\/e.

Should I get a third opinion? My OS and DDS don't seem to understand the pain - I am fearful that this is going to be a permenant state of pain. I'm afraid to press the matter as they might \/iew me as drug seeking - and I am aboslutely not that type of person. I'm just in a LOT of pain. I am still not able to chew, soft foods only, and e\/en with ibuprofen, and when I had the lortab, I didn't experience any pain free moments. Now the ibuprofen doesn't help the pain at all-at least with the lortab/ibuprofen combo it pro\/ided a chance to take the edge of the pain, not diminishing it completely, but making it tolerable to where I could focus on my work.

Help! What should I do? Am I going to suffer for another two weeks, two months?

Well, I sought a third opinion from another OS, and found that I had not one, but two dry sockets that neither my DDS nor my original OS had been able to detect. Apparently due to swelling they didn't probe past the swelling to determine the socket was not clotting.

Needless to say 15 minutes after seeing the second OS, I was pain free - or at least in minimal pain... manageable for sure. Just to think that I could ha\/e been pain free a week or so more ago, is really frustrating. But I am SO thankful for the third opinion. I guess it pays to follow your gut instinct. If something doesn't feel right, then it is your right to ask someone to check it out.

I just had all four of my impacted wisdom teeth removed 6 days ago and for the most part, I am not in a great deal of pain. However, my biggest pain is that all of my teeth are aching (mostly the 6 front most teeth, top and bottom) and I am so swollen I cannot close my mouth all the way or open very much. My jaw does not ache too bad but it is very stiff. Is this normal?

A question about an aching jaw...
I had my bottom wisdom teeth removed 6 days ago. both teeth had already grown partially out of the gum and the lower left had been completely sideways (the right was almost straight, but diagonal still).
after the surgery I was healing very well, I didn't even have to take any pain relievers other than the minimal amount of regular ibuprofen. it seemed the worse i had was a sore throat.
but 3 or 4 days after the surgery i began to feel a bit of pain in the removal site on the left side. now it is a constant, dull aching along the left side of my jaw and under my chin. i don't think it is as severe a pain as everyone has described dry socket to be. my sore throat is gone though.
i am concerned about dry socket because, although i didn't know it at the time, i had the extraction at the exact wrong time of my estrogen cycle (i am on hormonal contraceptives).
also, i had to stop taking amoxicillin yesterday (5 days after the surgery) because it turns out i am allergic. The dentist said it was ok to stop, i got the impression it was mostly to prevent any infections.

what could be the source of my aching jaw under the extraction site? after reading through this board i considered it could just be my teeth adjusting but i would like to hear some opinions.

Thanks

(p.s. i would rather not return to the same oral surgeon as he did not inform me of a lot of important things, and his receptionist was a jerk :\)
