In the past couple months, a hole has developed in the gum on my jaw, in the back behind my last tooth. It's not painful at all, but I notice it with my tongue and food gets stuck there sometimes. What I'd guess is my jawbone is visible through this hole. How serious is this?

Brad,

Have you ever had your 3rd molars (wisdom teeth) extracted? Because chances are, it may be one of your 3rd molars and it's finally erupting as opposed to the theory of exposed jaw bone. Bone exposed to an open environment is typically very painful.

I would recommend making an appointment with your general dentist and have him/her take a look (and perhaps an x-ray).

No, I've never had them extracted. Since it's not painful, I'll just wait until I get my dental insurance. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything more serious than wisdom teeth. Thanks for your help.

I have developed the same problem, at first my dentist thought it was a bone spur and filed it down and stitched the gum back over the bone, but it has returned. My wisodm teeth were removed over a decade ago and I cannot find any information online about this bizzareness. I am specualting thathis may be casued by Bruxism but I have found no references to gums developing holes as a result of grinding my teeth...

I have the same problem. There's a whole in my far left jaw. Im pretty sure it's not a wisdom tooth about to erupt, because I just got my wisdom tooth extracted... which unfortunately led to this hole. What could be the problem? What steps should I take?

This is weird. A few weeks ago my lower inner gum cracked/split under the second molar (I dont have lower wisdom teeth). It was painful and annoying. After butch poking around I picked out what I think is a tinny bone or tooth fragment. After 5 days of Tylenol and Anbesol I saw a dentist even though it was getting better. They did an xray and found nothing. Since then I feel a hole in the jaw bone under the gum. I swear its a hole in the bone since I can feel some sharp edges with my fingernail and tongue.

I can totally sympathize with this statement by the way - it's a shame how our healthcare is so poor, you can't even consider seeing a dentist until the problem becomes painful. I was in the same boat for a long time. I just wanted to state that.

As for your problem, there isn't much you can really do besides continue your regimen of flossing and brushing with any kind of dental hygiene toothpaste. When you get an opportunity, or get dental insurance, I'd advise you to see a dentist and nip the problem before it develops into a potentially more serious, and therefor more costly, condition!

I have the same problem. I have a hole in my gum on bottom left after last tooth. I have had it for well over a year maybe 2. I could feel a tooth (probably wisdom tooth) cutting thru gum about a year ago but it didn't cause any problems - until now. For the last week I have been in awful pain and it feels like the gum is closing over the tip of the tooth again. It is very tender to touch and feels very bruised. I am not sure whether I need an extraction or not as I cannot get an appointment with my dentist for another week as they do not class this as an emergency. I have also been trying to find another dentist (via this website I might add) who may see me sooner but when I submit a request for the dentist office to call me they are giving me times the will call but never do. Since yesterday this website has given me 3 different times they will get the dental office to contact me directly but guess what - I haven't heard anything!! So how long am I supposed to go thru this pain until I actually get to see or even speak to a dentist!!!!

I have the exact same problem in the exact same place. It started a while ago when i noticed a funny taste cummin from me back tooth. Then i noticed blood everytime i brushed that area. Then i noticed a gap appearing were food would get trapped, therefore i had to brush the food away which caused more bleeding. It has now developed into a crack going upwards n can be quite painful sometimes. Anybody know what to do? i dont realy wanna go see a dentaist till the pain becomes worse or untill me tooth starts to wobble

I suggest you go visit your dentist. You'll have to visit him eventually anyway.

I think you have neglected a serious problem. It is advisable to contact a dentist if you have any problem in your tooth and gums.Hole in the gum is called tooth decay in technical terms and you need immediate attention from a dentist.

This most certainly sounds like your wisdom tooth is coming out. Are you between the ages of 17 and 25? This is the time most people have wisdom teeth problems.

If food keeps getting stuck in the hole, you can develop a gum infection called pericoronitis.

I see this all the time at the emergency dental clinic. What's happening is that your wisdom teeth are coming out. This will lead to food getting stuck in the hole that may be accompanied by gum pain. I recommend consulting with your dentist to see if the wisdom teeth need to be removed.

I also had a piece of bone coming thru my mouth a few weeks after having my teeth deep cleaned where the dentist numbs you first. I found a site online about Jawbone Cavitation and it all made sense. It can be caused by something as simple as the deep cleaning or tooth extractions or even the injections themselves. Online you can read "Jawbone Cavitations: Infarction, Infection & Systemic Diesease" by Suzin Stockton. Anyway after taking aspirin and swabbing a prescription antiseptic mouthwash on the gum for a few weeks, it went away. I think the dead piece of bone just chipped off and the gum closed over.

I've had this happen to me 4 times. I'm not sure what causes it, possibly from an abscess, possibly from the gums being stretched from an extraction. Whatever the cause, if you leave it alone, the exposed jawbone will die and break off. If you try to hurry the process you risk infection and it will be more painful. Leave it alone and let the way God designed your body to take its course. You'll feel it get real loose with your tongue, it's then ready to come out. Hope this helps.

It sounds like your wisdom tooth is either starting to move up or abscessing. Either way, an opening in your gum like that can lead to infection very quickly. whiten teeth

I'd be surprised if this wasn't one of your wisdom teeth breaking the surface (judging by the description you gave). You might want to get some insurance quotes now before you actually need to take action, also, you may want to use a cap full of h202 (hydrogen peroxide, 3% strength) twice a day as mouthwash between now and when you actually get the extractions (*h2o2 will help to keep the area from getting infected which will in turn significantly lessen any tenderness/pain).

If it is not infected then it could just be a dent or healed hole in your gums. I would still go to the dentist and have them look at it. Also make sure you keep it clean so food and debris doesn't get in there and infect it.
