I had an excruciating absess with a root canal, last month. I went to my dentist, then 2 appts at the clinic, the the dentist again. They all said it was a sinus infection. i told them all. I wasn't that plugged up and my tooth was killing me. i was on antibiotics for over 4 weeks and was in so much pain, I couldn't sleep on a double dose of pain pills. My entire face was swollen. I went to the hospital and they told me it was sinus and admitted me. I was given an antibiotic drip and pain meds. When they took the cat scan the next day, they sent me on my way, and told me to see a sinus specialist. I did, was still in horrible pain (52 hours later)and she didn't pick up the tooth thing either. Fianlly, the antibiotics, kicked in and I was well for 3 weeks. Pain came back and I told my dentist to look really hard again. Sure enough, a root canal, with drainage for 3 weeks. It is now a month later, and i have 2 lesions on the next tooth. More like mouth sores, than inside my gum pain. Any help or suggestions?

why does it seem like only the DDS on here care? my damn dentist has told me the same as all of you. take the pills wait. My face is very very swollen now as is the inside of my tounge. I can no longer speak it is so bad and I fear it is closeing off my air passage. I am going to go into the ER here very soon. IT just tells me that many dentist have the compassion of a rock and are in it only for the money. My tooth is a tooth he crowned only 2 months ago. he sould have know then it needed a root canal. but no he is too damn greedy to do that. he now will charge me for the root canal and a new crown. Yeah me the one that has to drie a 20 yr old chevy to make his Mercedes payment. Unlike MD's DDS seem to be in this only for money and greed. I am very angery. I would try another dentist but no no one will take me as I have not seen them before. not even an emergency. Damn greedy dentist. I really do hate them. New title for them DMG = Doctors of Money and Greed!!!

Dear Tim Johnson,Sorry you haven't found a dentist in whom you would place your confidence. Maybe for good reason: "Pills" (including antibiotics) may be used as an adjunct to dental care, but do not, of themselves, fully address dental pain, especially swellings. You likely require immediate dental intervention to resolve the swelling. Get a second opinion. If a root canal is the treatment of choice, see an endodontist. Your dentist may not have been able to foresee the need for RCT, but when there is pain and swelling, "wait and see" is usually not the preferred approach. Please consider: http://dentistry.com/dentfind.asp

I don't have dental or medical insurance because of being self-employed and insurance is so cotton pickin' high I can't afford it. After my second child was born my once nice teeth started splitting and the enamel started chipping off and eventually the teeth either absessed and had to be pulled or broke off at the gum now I have only a few on the bottom that may possibly be salvageable (6) the rest are in very bad shape or none existant as far as visability goes. They are to say the least very embarrassing. I rarely smile and when I laugh I cover my mouth. What are my options other than pulling them one at a time and going without teeth for no telling how long (went thru that with my husband getting 2-6 pulled at a time and he is alot tougher than I am) What dentist or other professional should I see. Can my regular dentist take care of the ones that are broken off or do I need to see another professional? At 88 bucks per tooth with 23 teeth or partial teeth left to pull and then the dentures I'm going to be without a tooth in my head for a while depending on how much dentures cost. But right now other than the lortab for the pain and until my dentist is open on Tuesday what can I do to relieve the swelling and pain of this absessed eye tooth. The whole left side of my face is swollen and my eye is nearly swollen shut. This just came on within the last 12 hours. I can't eat and can barely talk without slurring badly and I'm starting to have trouble breathing through my nose. This probably sounds erratical and confusing because with the pain and misery I'm in im erratical and confused. LOL. Thank you for listening. Pam

I found putting some liquid benzocaine on a Q-tip and putting it on the gumline around the tooth, followed by some benzocaine in a jel form in or on the absessed tooth, with some ibuprofen or other pain killer helped.

I just had a tooth capped about 5 weeks ago. It has never stopped hurting, but the pain is not consistant. It hurts when air hits it if I breathe through my mouth, it hurts when something warm/hot touches it, and it hurts when antyhing cold hits it. My dentist put me on an antibiotic that I have been taking for about 7 days now, but I have seen no improvement. If I take a double dose of over the counter pain medication, such as excedrin, then it relieves the pain for about 4 hours. Does this sound like an absessed tooth?

The course of antibiotics was likely a waste of time. If the pulp is sensitive to hot and cold, the pulp (nerve chamber) is probably still vital and inflammed. The obvious scenarios to consider are a pulp that isn't healing and may require root canal treatment or a crown that does not fit as well as it might. I would see a good restorative dentist for a second opinion to evaluate the fit of the crown and the bite relationship. If that exam confirms a proper fit, then RCT may be the treatment if choice. If not, the crown should be remade. BTW, if it sounds like I'm on a tirade about the misuse of antibiotics, I am. Antibiotics may be used as an adjunct to dental care (or as a preventive measure due to systemic medical considerations), but do not, of themselves, "cure" dental ailments. There are exceptions, but antibiotics are generally over prescribed.

My teeth are actually really straight and look great. They want to place train tracks on. Although we were happy untill the dentist thinks we shud have a second aopinion he thinks we shud only do the botom but thats no choice, either all or none. i need help. i had a temp. crown put on a lower back tooth about 2 weeks ago. the past 4 days it has begun hurting to the point of just wanting to rip it out. i did notice that a little cement was left on the outside of the tooth right near the gum line. could this be causing the pain and infection? the cement dried and i was unable to scrape it off(which should not have been my job anyway) do you think this is going to be a root canal too? any advise will help.

I'm not a fan of dental home remedies or speculation of a dental diagnosis w/o a clinical exam. Please see your dentist for a definitive explanation of the situation.

Hello, I'm from WV and this makes the third time I have absessed teeth. They are all different teeth. Both of my cuspids and my first molar are the teeth I have had problems with. Pretty much I have just been putting holes in my 'bubble' to drain the infection. I ended up in the hospital once from swallowing to much infection and then it got into my sinus. But now I have three absessed teeth at once, getting used to the pain but I was wondering if there is any programs that help with dental assistance, as I can't afford to goto the dentist or a doctor for any type of treatment. Thank you!

B and C have posters. I got abscess under both of them and dentist told me he couldnt threat these tooth because of posters. It started 3 days ago. Now I take antibiotics and pain went away, but according to your answers it's temporarily. What should I do? It seems there is no such specialty as endodontist in Canada. Thanks.

Looks like my insurance wouldnt cover it ( extraction is OK, but I dont want it). Thanks again

There are exceptions, but antibiotics are generally over prescribed.[/B][/QUOTE] Thank Heavens I stumbled across this website! Dr. Wissot, I am trying to make a decision in the next few days. I saw my dentist 2 days ago and he examined my tooth. (I could not chew nor talk and when he tapped it lightly I screamed.) She thought it might be a TMJ problem because I have ground my teeth before. So I made an appointment with oral sugeon for next week. However, during the time period since I saw the dentist 2 days ago, now the pain is intense, gum is swollen around the tooth, and roof of mouth is red and swollen. I called my dentist and he said he would take me ASAP on Friday morning. He explained that I have to decide upon one of 2 options: (1)Go on antibiotics for a while to bring the swelling down or (2) pull the tooth since it is a wisdom and not needed. He also said the antibiotics might only work temporarily and then pain may return. I don't mind having the tooth pulled cause it hurts so bad. So, I said on phone, "yes, maybe I should have tooth pulled" I also dont like antibiotics too much because I have a candida problem sometimes. He wants me to start on the antibiotics right now before I see him again. So, even if he pulls the tooth he wants me to take the antibiotics before I see him again. Q1 If the infected tooth is removed, why would I need to take antibiotics? Isn't the infection gone from my mouth? Q2 Is the tooth worth saving? I am in so much pain I just cant think clearly from the neurontin and Darvovet I am taking now. Thank you very much, Mary Ann

Without an exam, no one can advise you about the value of saving a particular tooth. As a general rule, few wisdom teeth are worth saving. Why would you need antibiotics if the tooth is removed? If there is no clear medical indication, your dentist will likely say "as a precaution." Personally, I'd need a better reason than that.

I have been reading through all of these posts and am mortified by the way my dentist in handling this. First they wouldn't give me pain killers or new antibiotics (Amox didn't do anything). Then they wouldn't pull it, insisting that I see an oral surgeon (he's out of town for 3 weeks) What am I suppose to do?! Nobody seems to care that I am in pain although they have stated "you have a REALLY nasty infection in that tooth". Do I need to change dentists or is it normal to be in pain for weeks before they will do something about it???

Wow I'm amazed that so many people have the same problem. My Dentist (a regular Dentist) got me in to clean out the tooth and put the medicine in it, but my appt for the actual root canal is not for a few weeks. I've checked are there are no Endodontists in our area at all. They gave me 15 Vicodin and some antibiotics. I have been in such severe pain I can hardly hold my head up more than a few minutes at a time. This was 3 days ago and when I called them yesterday to tell them of the severe pain they said it was normal until they do the actual root canal. So I'm supposed to have this pain for 3 weeks? They don't want to give me any more pain meds because they are afraid of addiction! So I'm supposed to suffer? I'm really confused as well. In addition they mistakenly had me pay twice what the amount was that I should have and said they will just credit it to this next one.. this bothers me as well I've just been hurting to much to deal with it.

I had a tooth crowned 3 months ago (#19) and it probably should have had a root canal. Now, it is apparently absessed. I went to the dentist and they gave me penecillan and vicadin and told me to come back in 2 weeks. I took the pain meds every 1 1/2 hours with no relief. I called my dentist and they said to give it 24 hours for the antibiotics to kick in. 24 hours later I called them back (still in pain) and they said that maybe I should give it 36 hours. They are closed on Friday, so they went ahead and called in an Rx for Amox. I got it and started taking that antibiotic. Luckily, that night at 2AM, the pain went 90% away. I am now pain free and able to sleep and eat, but when I awoke in the morning, my gum around the tooth is very swollen. There is no pain, but it definitely is bubbled on both the inside and outside gumline of the tooth. And, my cheek is also swollen and rock hard inside. My question is this; is this normal? Is this something I should worry about and get looked at right away? Or, is it just my body (antibodies, meds, etc.) doing their job? Is this the infection getting ready to burst? I am not in any pain and still planning on going back to my dentist in 2 weeks. I just am worried that I might have a potential problem that could lead to serious infections of my gums, teeth or sinus if this bursts. As soon as the pain went away, this bubble type of swelling appeared around my tooth. No pain anymore, but a very big bubble swelling in my cheek and around the tooth. Any ideas???

What have you done about your situation? Has anyone responded. Having this happen on Labor Day was not the best of timing.

First relay your concerns to the treating dentist. Most dentists will bend over backwards to address any patient concern. If that doesn't resolve the issue, see another dentist for a second opinion. If you are still not satisfied, you may choose to contact the local component of the American Dental Association and request a "Peer Review Committee Inquiry." It is a fair, reasonable, no cost process to resolve conflicts. A little over a year ago, in July, I went to my dentist complaining of a left rear molar that was sensitive. This tooth had an old filling and had been watched closely for years. At this visit I was advised to discontinue using any whitening toothpast and use sensitive toothpaste. In August the tooth began to be very painful and I called to try to get an appointment, but was told that the earliest I could be seen was late September. I made an appointment, but before my appoinment, my tooth became extremely infected, on a Friday. I was in agony. Attempts to reach my dentist failed until Sunday. He called inprescription of antibiotics. When I was finally seen on Tuesday, he immediately did a root canal and temporary crown. That was a year ago. I have been back many times because the tooth hurts. He's ground down several of my teeth to improve my bite. He insists that I've caused my problems by bruxing or clenching, however, I never had a problem before this episode. I think that any clenching or bruxing is in response to the pain and tension of this work. I am now experiencing tmj and fear that it will only grow worse. My dentist is now fitting me for a splint to stop bruxing, but I don't think that will solve the problem. What is my recourse?

I just moved and haven't found a dentist yet but my fiancee's parents suggested I go see their dentist. I think my back tooth on the bottom left is absessed because it happend before and it's beginning to swell up again. The dentist I use to go to, gave me treatment to make the swelling go down and then a week later he did a root canal and filled the tooth with the white filling. It stayed in for a long time but then about 8 months or so later, it fell out. I never got a chance to go back and the tooth has gotten so much worse. I don't know if the filling he used was temporary or what. But now the tooth broke in half and I just want to go get it pulled. For my other back teeth that need filled, I was wondering if you could explain the difference between the white filling and the silver filling? It seems like the silver is more permanent. And if I'm right then I want my teeth done with the silver stuff because I'm tired of not being able to enjoy my food when I eat and always worrying if something's going to crack or fall out. What I don't understand in the first place is that I brushed my teeth all my life and they still went bad. Guess I didn't floss enough.

Over a year ago I had a cavity filled in my front right top (from my perspective). The tooth was immediately sensitive. After going back to the dentist he told me I grind my teeth and to get rid of the sensitivity I'd need to buy a mouth guard from him. Yea right! So I ignored it for... 6 months until my face started to swell. My dentist was away on vacation so I went to a dentist they refereed. After getting xrays, he told me my tooth was abscessed, perscribed antibiotics and said I'd need to get a root canal in a few weeks when my doctor got back. A day later my face had continued to swell so I made a trip to the ER. They gave me a huge bottle of Clindamycin to take. I finished a little more than half a bottle of Clindamycin before I stopped (why? I don't know). I didn't get a root canal. The tooth is okay, doesn't hurt but it's slightly translucent. However, on the right side of my face along the nose line there is still swelling (not enough to be visible though). As well there's a hard bump in my gum above the abscessed tooth where the infection is. It hurts to put pressure on it. Do I have to get a root canal? Will the infection dissolve the bone around it if I just leave it alone? Thanks

I have a good question. What do you do when your whole mouth is hurting due to decay and because you have NO INSURANCE and you cannot afford the ungodly amounts that dentist charge to get the problem fixed!I also have MVP which means that mouth infections travel to my heart. WOW! Even with that said, dentist still only care for people with insurance or a several grand of cash in order to fix a life saving problem. Do I have that kind of money or insurance? No. I don't work. I go to school to try to make it in this life. Untill then, I hope my painful, decayed, absesed teeth don't kill me before I finish. THANK YOU to the selfish doctors known as Dentistry and to our government who does'nt allow dental emergancy health care (unless your over 65 or under 18) HINT: We need to think like Canada!!!
