I was told today by a dentist that I have an absessed tooth and would need it to be extracted and he gave me some amoxicillan and tylenol with codeine and sent me home. Now I'm noticing a big bubble type thing in my gums above my tooth. It hurts pretty bad still...is this part of the infection or something I need to have checked out again with a different dentist? (this last one wasn't so helpful). Is it going to pop in my mouth or something?

It sounds as though you have a "fistula track" forming. This typically results from a tooth infection and occurs because the infection is located at the tip of the root, surrounded by bone. Enough pressure and swelling has taken form that the infection has found its way through the pores within the bone and out into the gums/soft tissue. This "bubble" may pop simply by applying pressure to it and should this occur, you will find pus draining from it. Popping this bubble of pus will not have any direct effect on the infection as the source is deep within the bone caused by the tooth. I am curious as to why your dentist recommended an extraction instead of treating it with root canal therapy and then restoring the tooth? Is there severe bone loss around the infected tooth that makes it not worth saving?

Hm... a correction on my last note. I believe I meant to say "fistula tract". Forgive me as it's been a long day.

I have to tell you I saw the worst dentist ever. He didn't explain a thing to me. Just that it's an absess and has to be removed and after a 4hr wait, that's all I got out of him plus the rx. I plan on calling a different dentist on Monday and getting a 2nd opinion because I would rather not loose a tooth if I can absolutely help it. It's definately a relief to know that this thing in my mouth is not uncommon since the dr didn't mention anything about it..I found it after I got home! Thanks for the info!

Not sure what you expect any of us to say other than, "Go see your dentist for a comprehensive exam to find out what's wrong and treat as needed." Life happens with or without insurance. If you don't have medical insurance and you badly broke an arm, would you also sit there and debate on what to do? Infections in the mouth can sometimes become very dangerous as it is just inches away from your brain. It is better to be safe than to take unnecessary risks.

yeah. i was just searching on google to find info on an absessed tooth - how it forms and all [what causes it] and came to this site. i went to the dentist today and they drained my tooth out [had a filling - it had a lot of infection].. i have to get a root canal next week. it's going to cost a total of $1,680. i have no insurance and i am a college student. life does happen without insurance.... that's for sure.

I too just had my absessed tooth drained yesterday. The dentist has left the canal open to drain, yet I still have swelling and a lot of pressure along my cheekbone. I don't think anything is drainning or else I'd know it (bad smell) I also wasn't subsribed any med's, however the Root canal is schedualed for monday. Is this normal? Thanks janet

yo im Doug i have an absesed tooth i have gotten one once a year for the past 3 years but they say it is cuz i broke my two front teeth on a trampolene the bubble type thing is acctually the infection fluids that need to be drained and the best thing for the pain is 4 aleive and amoxicillan is to stop the infection from going higher like into your eye also it needs to be drained by putting a small hole in the top of your lip the part in between the gum and lip but im getting dential surgery on it this time because it keeps coming back ive had 3 root canals and i have had braces which i think is an underlieing problem and now i wear the retainers the top always pushes my teeth around too much and that was the first time they thought it was just tramatized well thats it for me.
