I was at the dentist's office having work done on fitting a new crown. While shaving the tooth down with the drill, somehow, someway, the drill got away from the dentist and bore into the underside of my tongue requiring about 5mins and about 10 swaths of cotton to control the bleeding before he could continue. I fully understand mistakes happen but the problem is that although I knew, felt, and heard it happen, the dentist said nothing. When the prep for the crowwn was done, he fitted the plastic temps, shook my hand, and walked out saying see you in two weeks.

Having faith and trust in my dentist, I thought the problem was small and taken care but when I got home, I noticed a hole the size of a penny in my tongue and a gigantic vein/artery sticking out from the hole. Immediately went to the ER and was examined by two doctors, both of whom said the wound would require stitches and antibiotics; four stitches later and a ten day course of some powerful antibiotics and I was free to go.

My first and foremost pressing problem is that I obviously don't want to go back to this dentist to have him complete the work he started, not because of the mistake, but because he never said anything and let me walk out of his office with a potentially serious condition brewing in my mouth. How do I get another dentist to complete the work without having to repay for the entire crown again? My next question is does anybody think this dentist was negligent in leaving my mouth in this condition without advising me that it might need attention that is beyond his capabilities, some antibiotics, or at the very least, to monitor the condition carefully? If so, should he take some money off the bill, and if so, how much would be reasonable?

As a dentist at an emergency dental clinic, I can say that it is true that these things do happen. Sometimes there is minor trauma to the tongue or the cheek and it usually heals quite quickly. However, it is the responsibility of the dentist to inform the patient what has happened and to properly manage the situation. From your description, it sounds as though it was more than just a minor trauma. If you are upset about it, you should discuss this with your dentist and express your disappointment. Maybe you both can agree on some sort of compromise/compensation.
