I had a root canal yesterday, and was prescribed an antibiotic. But ever since I had the work done my eye won't stop watering and my nose won't stop running, but it's only on the side of my face that the work was done on. Could it be because I am allergic to the novocaine, or I had too much novocaine or something? I would think it was just normal allergies this time of the year, but i was fine until after the appointment, and this is ridiculous, it's like a waterfall. Any advice? Is this normal, when will it go away? I called then dentist and he told me to continue taking the antibiotic and call him back if the symptoms don't stop in a day or two. What's going on?thanks, -Julia

Let's not jump to hasty conclusions. The dentist seems to have offered good advice. If you have a regular allergy med, this may be a good time to take it. Then be patient and call him if you don't improve.

[QUOTE]Julia, the same thing happened to me. Two weeks ago I had a root canal on the upper right back tooth. Since then my right cheek aches, my right temple throbs, I have a sinus headache, and my right eye waters and my right nostril drips. I have never had any sinus conditions or allergies.

The same thing just happened to me. I do not have a history of sinus infections. The tooth that was treated is very close to the sinus. The endodontist who did my root canal said he found and treated a fourth canal that does not show up on X-Rays. Also, due to the sinus problems, I have just had the root canal checked by a different endodontist. His X-Ray shows that the filling in the biggest canal expanded a bit beyond the tip of the root. He says this is not usually a problem. But I'm already having problems -- how do I know this isn't the cause?

An old professor once told me that sometimes the best medicine is "tincture of time."Medical maladies can certainly strain our patience, but it's usually best to give the doctor the benefit of the doubt.

I just spoke to my medical doctor. He said, "I don't want to alarm you, but if there is a foreign object in your sinus, you could get meningitis." He also said that this is highly unlikely and that it is not usual but not totally unheard of to get a sinus infection after a root canal and have no further complications. He did say he may send me to have a CAT scan of my sinuses, after seeing how I do on the antibiotics. I would encourage anyone having this problem to see a medical doctor as well as a dentist and explain your concerns to the doctor.

In Feb 2004 I had a root canal done on top Last Molar. I developed symtoms starting that day. Throbbing in my maxillary sinus on the same side. This continued for a year and I kept my Dentist informed but he gave me no insight as to what was going on. I finally became very ill by Dec 2004. I could not breath ot of that same side nostril and my eye felt like it was bulging. I went to ENT Doctor, Had a sinus ct scan and my left maxillary sinus was totally blocked with a mucocelle. I had to have surgery to clean out the infection. There was granulated tissue on the back side of the root canal site. I felt better for about four months and then symtoms came back so I had the damm thing extracted. I also had to have a sinus closure surgery. I fell great now and my face even feels different. The extracted molar only had one canal and a wire stuck out of the apex of the root area. I plan to approach my Dentist who did the root canal. Is this technique safe? My ENT Doctor said it caused my Cronic Sinisitis.

First relay your concerns to the treating dentist. Most dentists will bend over backwards to address any patient concern. If that doesn't resolve the issue, see another dentist for a second opinion. If you are still not satisfied, you may choose to contact the local component of the American Dental Association and request a "Peer Review Committee Inquiry." It is a fair, reasonable, no cost process to resolve conflicts. For a list of local dental societies, please visit: http://www.ada.org/ada/organizations/local.asp For more information, please visit /offsite.asp?articleID=12&dentID=1 Consider consulting an endodontist (RCT specialist).

I had a root canal performed yesterday. When I was driving home from the procedure my left eye and nose started tearing and running and has continued non stop. This is the same side as the procedure was done on and I've never had any type of problems with sinuses before. After contacting my dentist, he informs me he's never heard of this type of reaction and assures me this is not related to the novacaine.Others out there who have had this problem, how long can I expect it to continue? What causes it? Apparently, this is a problem for some who have had root canals performed. I'm in more discomfort now with the discomfort of running nose and tearing eye than I was with a sore tooth!!! Thanks for any info anyone has to offer.

If you have not already done so, please consult with an endodontist (RCT specialist). There are palliative "cold medications" available to address the symptoms, but precise treatment recommendations must come from your doctor.

I had Sinus problem for a very long time, During cold winter times my nose would not stop dripping from my throat. Nothing would come out from my nostlers/nose. I went to the specialist and no luck. So one day my wife told me to wear a beenie when i go to sleep and the next day i woke up with no drainage. So since then even in summer time i go to sleep with my beenie on and it works like a charm.

I had a root canal three days ago on #3 which has a cap on it (upper right middle tooth). When I got home from the procedure my nose started to bleed on that side and continued for about a day. Then my nose started running clear on that side like a bad cold. It has continued steadily. How long should I give this runny nose before I go back to the endontist? Also, the gum around that tooth had been irritated for a few months(I got the cap a year ago. It continues to get worse and now the gum around the next tooth is inflamed also (this one also has a cap). Could the cap be causing this? I have to see the dentist anyway in a few days to get the temporary filling from the root canal replaced but maybe I should ask for new caps.

I had promblem with my upper right side tooth. I could not breath because i on one side of nostril were root canal was done. I was assured that it was the filling used for the root canal because i could smell it. so i went back a few times to the dentist and he disagreed with me and told me it was the infection. I felt very ill like for 6months and i felt that thing traveling around my mouth moving from one side to the next. so after many times of tryning to sneeze it out (the filling) Nowadays i feel much better, but it was hell dealing with this and i knew i was right ive been the hospital they've taken sinus xrays did not find anything. Should i confront the dentist who did this or could this have been a something thats happens?

Amanda,Confrontations are not usually productive. Six months after the fact, without supporting documentation and expert corroboration, you may find yourself in an awkward position. Please see another dentist for a clinical evalution.

Hi Colleen my name is Debbie and I'm having the same problem you had. Every time I have dental work done (which has only been twice) I have done this with the numbing of the nose area, face swelling, nose running, eye watering and the area that I had the root canal is just throbbing!!!!!! I swear I think that my sinus is infected or I'm allergic to novacaine or something, of coarse the dentists all deny it, the physicians usually don't have an answer either. Did you ever find out anything and how do you feel now and how long did it take for you to get over it? I'm suppose to go back next Wednesday for the crown. Thanks for your answer. Debbie

Julia, my name is Debbie and I'm doing the extact same thing you did, with the eyes, nose, and swelling except the tooth area of where the root canal was preformed is just throbbing. I just had a root canal on Wed 2-22-06. I've had dental work done before and I did the same thing. I'm miserable. Did you ever find relief, what did you do, and how long did it take for you to find relief. I've been taking an antibiotic and a pain pill, (no help) also anything for sinus that I can get my hands on. Thanks so much for your answer. Deb

dr. wissot. my name is andrea. i had a root canal done early february 07 and since then i have had a nagging pain in my temple like a very bad sinus infection. i have never had a sinus infection before. i went to my regular physician who put me on an antibiotic which seemed to help for a while but when i went back to the endodontist he lost his cool and in a (not so nice tone) told me that i had messed up any chances of him being able to tell what was causing the pain. he said that he wanted me to come back after a few weeks of letting the meds that my reg physician had prescribed wear off. when i went back to him, his only advice was that i probably need another root canal in the tooth next to the one he had already done. i don't know what to do. i am considering going to an ent doctor which of course will probably really spin the endodontist up, but i have lost confidence in him and his bedside manner. any advice?

I also am having the symptoms you are describing after having a root canal- hence my search online for an answer and finding this site. I'm almost sorry I looked for an answer if this is going to be a chronic problem, as these sound pretty serious. I'm wondering if the common denominator here is that we all who have these symptoms had an infection/abcess at the tip of the root? I've had several root canals with no problem. This time the endodontist cemented hard up past the root (I felt it- not bad pain-wise, but it scared me!) and the first of my "drips" smelled like chlorine and were slightly discolored with blood. I've been thinking it could be that the cement is pressuring the sinus there and causing the watery drips. My first impression once the novocaine wore off was that this was the best endo-guy so far, and that this is the most solid root canal as well. I'm using a saline spray ("Ocean", available at your local drug store) and laying down for the first five minutes after use twice a day in hopes of belaying any chance of infection (because of the blood) in my sinus. I'll keep an eye on this site, and will ask my regular dentist (whom I will see soon to get a regular filling in the root canal) and post his response here. I have the utmost faith in both of these men- they have come after many a "dentist change" with high reccommendation, and seem to be proving out to be great. Dentistry is, at best, a very subjective art- each person walks in with unique nuances physically and psychologically, and I feel for them- they are indeed brave to take on such a profession! However, there are those in every profession who should be brought to task. The suggestion of Dr. Wosset makes sense to me- that you contact ADA and see where that leads if you truly feel you've been mishandled. We'll all sleep better knowing one bad dentist has been taken to task. To sit and "stew" would seem to make you reluctant to seek dental care when you need it, and that could be disastrous- even fatal.

Sargenti Paste....Sometimes they even add peanut oil to the toxic mix.Paraformaldehyde-containing endodontic filling materials or sealers (frequently known as Sargenti pastes, N-2, N-2 Universal, RC-2B or RC-2B White) should not be used for endodontic treatment because those materials are unsafe. Extensive scientific research has proven unequivocally that paraformaldehyde-containing filling materials and sealers can cause irreversible damage to tissues near the root canal system including the following: destruction of connective tissue and bone; intractable pain; paresthesia and dysthesia of the mandibular and maxillary nerves; and chronic infections of the maxillary sinus. Moreover, scientific evidence has demonstrated that the damage from paraformaldehyde-containing filling materials and sealers is not necessarily confined to tissues near the root canal. The active ingredients of these filling materials and sealers have been found to travel throughout the body and have been shown to infiltrate the blood, lymph nodes, adrenal glands, kidney, spleen, liver and brain. http://www.aae.org/NR/rdonlyres/14F3726F-DA2D-4155-97E9-D0201E690B17/0/paraformaldehydefillingmaterials.pdf

Hi there. I, myself have been experiencing similar issues after having had a root canal for almost a year ago now. I have now been back many times for adjustments to crowns, (had 2 crowns then 2 root canals- same teeth) The adjustments never worked. I have also had an adjustment (second root canal basically) on one of the teeth suspected of being the problem tooth. Oh, and both teeth are top right molars, side by side. I keep getting sinus infections, which I never had before and now am experiencing a numb feeling in my left side of my face? Don't know if this is a correlation, b/c it is the oposite side of my face? I have read about nerve damage possiblities, etc. but, as we all know you can make yourself nuts by reading too many of the wrong articles... my question is why am I continuing to have pain in these 2 teeth, with hot foods mainly, sometimes it feels as though my tooth(crown) is about to fall off? Could this be a concern that I might in fact have a loose crown after the seoond re-root canal procedure? And, secondly how about the facial numbness? Any thoughts on why/how this could happen etc.? I would greatly appreciate any help from the dr. or if anyone else has a similar situation and has had any luck with anything.. at this point, I feel like just pulling the teeth, though the issue is that it could be just one tooth causing the problem and not 2 and I hate to loose 2 teeth if not needed, and if it is the back molar, not as big of a deal, but the second to last one, would cause me to have an implant/bridge.. Thanks so much! Oh, and the numbness comes and goes and currently I have another sinus infection and the numbness is here on/off at this time.

I too am having sinus problems and I would like to know how to proceed. I had 2 teeth extracted 2 weeks ago. I was in a lot of pain and let the Dr know that the pain medicine that he prescribed was not working and I hurt. His response was that I needed 2 root canals done on the teeth in front of each tooth extraction. I did this but still remained in a lot of pain. This past Tuesday the dentist took out the temp fillings and put in the permanent ones. I hurt so bad that night I could not sleep, i went back in yesterday and she shaved them down. That is when i realized what was causing the pain to be so excruciating. Sinuses...Here I am two weeks later since i started this process and I have swelling and pain in the sinus cavity next to the bottom of the right side of my nose. The pain starts there and spreads along side the right side of my face to my ear along with throbbing at the right temple. Now I need to go back in for more ex rays. If something is wrong should i be held responsible for paying for their mistakes? The dentist who removed my 2 teeth did not even take ex rays afterwards to see if everything was ok. My regular dentist who did the root canals took them before and after she did them. Just looking for advice. The pain has been terrible and I am worried that I am about to get more.

You can always go to an endodontist for a second opinion if a general dentist did the root canal...or find another endo if an endo did it. If you are having pain, you need to figure out why. Make sure they did not use Sargenti paste on you. It can cause problems with an even properly done root canal. It likely isn't that but worth checking. You'll need to get your records to see. Not an attempt to scare you but better to know if that is the case. I wish someone had warned me. I wouldn't be where I am looking at a lifetime of PERMANENT chronic debilitating pain if some one had. www.sargentipaste.org

Yes, I would suggest getting a copy of the records and then getting a second opinion. A qualified doctor after examination should be able to answer your questions about what you're experiencing.

It sounds like there was possibly a communication through the sinus. Since the sinus is sometimes right to the roots of the tooth, when the dentist is using instruments to clean the root, the instrument can go past the tip of the root and into the sinus. This leads to inflamation of the sinus, with possible nose bleeding and fluid release from the nose. Don't worry, this usually resolves on its own after a few days or upto a few weeks. This sinus is close to the roots of teeth and sometimes the dentist instrument can go past the root and into the sinus. Not to worry though, as this will typically heal on its own. ------------------------------------------- children dentist

i'm at this really confusing place right now. almost all of my dental work was done before i was 15. all amalgam fillings. maybe 12. i am 39 now. no crowms, no root canals. on my last dental visit the dentist said an old amalgum filling was leaking and needed to be replaced. he said that there wasn't much chance of a root canal. he put in a dental damn? and removed the old filling. i wish i knew how bad mercury was before the removal because i know even with the damn i got some vapor and some fluid went down my throat. almost immediately (after the anethesia wore off) the tooth was cold and pressure sensitive. i had no symptoms before at all. the new symptoms were immediate and stable. not any better or worse 3 weeks later. after the removal he showed me some photos and was talking crown. i didn't like this. apparently the cracks are worse then he thought. then after i told him of the symptoms (2 weeks later) he sent me for an root canal eval. they said i would be a good candidate. i scheduled and then canceled. i need more info. back to the original point of this thread. i too had nasal drainage. only on the problem tooth side. and this was not normal drainage. it was thin and ran like others said like a small stream. this is not how my nose runs for a cold. also it was orange. i think there was blood in it. it really stands out from that my nose normally does when runny. i think they are linked. so here i am trying to figure out what to do. extraction? feel free to chime in thx.

If your symptoms don't clean up after a few days, then you might want to contact your dentist. You may have had a reaction but there's nothing that can really be done now. You could also be reacting to the antibiotic which your dentist can make a note of and prescribe you a different antibiotic next time.Vega Sinclair, Dental Plans
