Hello all,
I thought I would post an update on my current OrthoClear experiences.

After contacting both my Ortho and OrthoClear regarding my cracked upper aligner (my first pair), I had recieved my replacement trays six days later. The new aligners were indeed thicker and felt a lot sturdier. In the beginning they were really tight, and I was curious if the previous trays had been working at all. I guess it was like putting on a pair of new shoes... the aligner had to adust to my teeth and vice versa. Everything fell into place and movement continued.

Today was the 4th day with the new aligners and everything had been going perfectly fine until this morning. I was taking my top aligner out to brush, and yes, *crack*, on the right side of my front right tooth... again. My two front teeth are slightly in front of the rest of my teeth, so I am beginning to think that it really is the anatomy of my teeth that is causing that area of the aligner to crack . Anyhow, I am somewhat disappointed again, and wondering if this cracking is going to prevent me from advancing in treatment as expected. I was supposed to wear this set for another week then start the second set. My next apptmnt is on Friday. We'll see what happens.

Okay, I'm off to let my ortho know about this new crack .

I just started OrthoClear yesterday and am having problems with pain and jaw locking. I understand the pain is from my teeth moving, however, is it like this every 3 weeks when I get new trays? It is really uncomfortable - to the point I don't want to take the trays out to eat because I know how bad it will hurt to put back in. As far as the jaw locking, it started when the ortho used the cheek retractors to put on my buttons, but hasn't subsided yet, and is just adding to the discomfort...is it really worth this?

Hey gang,

I'm in the Seattle area and just got my Invisalign aligners today...so far so good. My orthodontist said there are too many problems with the Orthoclear trays so he didn't recommend them. As well, they take a long time to get from Pakistan to the US apparently.

Wishing everyone straight teeth and a beautiful smile!

Hey Reenie, where is your location?

I've read all postings, and we are exceptionally pleased with our progress and care. Our aligners are arriving on time (so far!). I hope all of you
are doing better these days. What my ortho asked of me was to complete a testimonial page for OrthoClear. I respect him and he has a wonderful reputation in our area. But I have reservations about doing that at this time. I want to wait until our treatment is completed. Has anyone else been given a form from their ortho? If so, read it closely; it asks you to grant permission for Orthoclear to use your name/info etc... in brochures and other advertisements. Good luck to all of you!!!!
PS My ortho realy likes OrthoClear!

I thought I would post an update and some good news. I had my orhto appt this morning to pick up my 4th set of aligners. Unfortunately, my 4th set was delayed by two weeks, but I received them this morning, along with my 5th and 6th sets of aligners. I'm hoping that OrthoClear is back on track and wanted to share the good news. Happy Orhtoclearing to everyone!

Hey Erin,

Glad to hear that your treatment is progressing along well.

I'm on my third set of trays. I haven't had any problems with cracking since the new material was used.

My husband told me that he's beginning to notice a difference in my teeth. I know that my bite sure feels different, so I'm glad that he's seeing a change. It's so hard to tell when I see my teeth all the time.

And believe it or not, I still have 5 out of 6 buttons still on my teeth! I was pretty sure that I'd lose them all after the first one came off on the first day.

I can now take off my trays one-handed! For me, the best way to remove my trays without popping a button is to slowly take off the back right side to almost the front, then wiggle the back right again, moving to the front until the whole thing pops off. The left side just comes off without issue. I do the same for the bottom. This is how the ortho's office removed them, so I thought I'd try the same. Before, I'd remove them by using both hands to pry both ends at the back of my mouth at the same time. I like the one-handed method better.

Happy OC'ing everyone!

Eas423, I am experiencing much of the same pain. I had my first set of aligners put on two days ago and the pain is still pretty intense. Like you, I dread meal times because of the pain that I feel when I take them off and put them back on. Is there anyone else who experienced this same problem with pain? If so, how long did it last? Does the pain come back every three weeks with new trays? I am just kind of miserable right now and am looking for some advice. Thanks.

Hey Bambam,

Although I can't speak for everyone, it seems (from the board chatter) that the pain seems to last for anywhere from 2-5 days when you put in a new set of aligners.

For me, the pain is at its peak on days 2 and 3. I take lots of pain meds, try to sleep as much as possible. On those days, I eat only foods that are really soft, like oatmeal and soup. And it never hurts to have an extra glass of wine or two.

By day 5 I can crunch on popcorn without pain (and without taking any pain meds). Yeah, it's awful that we have to go through the pain at the beginning of each stage. But think about how great your smile will look when you're done!

Hang in there!

Hi everyone, just thought I would post an update on how things are going for me so far...

I'm going on week 2 of my first aligners. No pain whatsoever now, and its really easy to pop the trays in and out, but still having jaw issues. The ortho thinks it was strained while they were creating my buttons, and it's that slowly going away. This is not a normal side effect of the trays, fyi.

Also, last night my top tray ripped. I'll call the ortho on Monday and see what he says to do. It ripped right at the front top button hole, which doesn't surprise me when I think about it. Every time I take the tray in and out the button scrapes the tray in the same spot, slowly wearing down a line in the tray. Not sure if this theory makes sense or not!

I'm not looking forward to putting in tray set 2, but I'll post on the pain when the time comes! I've already planned to drink protein shakes for those two days - haha!

I know this board has been really helpful to me. For those looking for more info, you might also want to read the invisalign thread as well. Since the products are so similar, most opinions will apply to either product.

To borrow from an earlier post, Happy OCing everyone!

I keep hearing the competition between invisalign and orthoclear. I work for a orthodontist in houston. Actually orthoclear and invisalign were both invented by the same guy, so I would have no problems being one of the first patients. I havn't seen any patients with cracked aligners yet. The ortho clear seems to fit our patients better. It also seems clearer and is smoother along the gingiva. I still love invisalign but in the long run it's my personal opinion that ortho clear is more compfortable. For the doctors it is great as well because with invisalign you have a set number of trays. With ortho clear they can add on treatment as needed; pretty clever if you ask me.

When invisalign came out it was also based in pakistan to start with. Then when the inventor sold invisalign the base was moved to costa rica. Again the inventor of these aligners is also the inventor of orthoclear. Someone said that their orthodontist said that there were too many problems with orthoclear; that was a boldfaced lie. If there ARE problems with it I'd like to know what these problems are. We love the orthclear at our office and will continue to support it. As far as the litigation between invisalign and orthoclear; I don't think orthoclear would have been allowed to start their buisiness without proper steps so I think everything will be ok. Besides, invisalign can't dominate the market forever. In orthodontics things change so fast I'd be expecting more companies to jump on the clear tray wagon. Where there is a will there is a way.

did you hear about the earthquake in pakistan 30,000 people dead! It's very sad to see. I'm afraid treatments may be delayed but you can't blame the people for a natural disaster of this size. We must be patient in times like these.

Actually seven... the founder of Invisalign that you are talking about was forced out of Invisalign because he mismanaged the company. He started orthoclear appearently as a means of getting back at them for forcing him out. There is pending litigation between the two sides as Invisalign sued orthoclear for not starting their business properly, as you stated. In this country and the world, you can basically start any company you want, until someone or something shuts you down for being improper. In our office, we are reserving judgement on orthoclear especially after hearing all of these reports of cracking and breaking orthoclear aligners. but best of luck to you guys!

Of course your ortho loves OC - he pays half as much for them but charges you the same as he would for Invisalign.

But he pays the money up front with orthoclear before the case...and orthoclear is not proven as the ripped aligners are indicating. This is why our practice will avoid offering this cut-rate knockoff unless it improves..

Sure, there have been problems. However in my case, OC's customer service has been outstanding. There has been no cracking/tearing with my new trays since I reported the problem about my first set of aligners.

As a patient who is currently on my 3rd set of aligners (getting 4th and 5th trays next week), I would recommend them completely.

At any rate, it seems somewhat futile to go on about which treatment is superior. Those who are on OC will say OC is. Those who are on Invisalign will say Invisalign is. I'm sure that at one time or another, Invisalign had some sort of problem or another with their aligners when they first started up in the 90's.

The important thing that everyone here seems to want to learn/share their experiences. No need to bash.

For anyone interested, you should absorb all the information about other people's experiences, consider your ortho's advice, and calculate your budget to make your own decision about which treatment to take.

Cheers!

It has been 8 weeks since impressions, and today I go in for my first set of trays. I had braces as a kid via some "factory orthodontist," but once I ditched the retainer as a teenager, teeth have been shifting. I have minor crowding below, and minor gap above. Orthodontist is charging me $2900 (all included)in Philadelphia, and I am very optimisitic. When I shopped for Invisalign, best quote in the area (after going through 6 ortho's) was $4200. I really enjoy this discussion board, and you guys have kept me interested in reading your progress!!
I have a fairly high pain threshold, and hopefully I can learn from what you have taught me about gingerly caring for the trays, during removal and implantation. I may be back on today to let you all know how the first set of orthoclear aligners worked out!! Thanks in advance for your help :-D

P.S., I am 28 year old biology teacher, let's see if the students notice tomorrow!!

Heh, heh, heh...

No they won't see them, they'll HEAR them!

I'd practice talking tonight if I were you. You're gonna have a lisp for the first few days. On the bright side, the lisp does go away, so don't panic too much.

I agree with Christine - practice talking. I actually sang along with the radio all night to get my mouth used to it. I just had fun with it but you definitely will have a lisp at first but if you just talk slowly and pay attention to each word - it's not too bad.

Hi all!
You know, I acutally didnt notice that my lisp was completely gone! So yeah, dont worry about it. You'll adjust in no time

It's been two weeks since my last ortho visit where I had two buttons installed on top, and three on the bottom. also, my ortho had shaved one-tenth of a millimeter from the outside edges of my two front teeth to make some room for movement (that made a funny grinding sound, but didnt hurt at all) I had also recieved my second set of aligners that day. For those of you who hadn't had the "buttons" put on, they used my first set of trays as a template where the holes were filled in with a compound that was hardened with a light. Then the trays were pryed off my teeth (OUCH!) and the bumps were shaped and sanded to make them smoother. I was instructed to wear my first set of aligners for two more days so i would get used to working with the buttons. surprisingly, I could feel the first set of trays working on the teeth that had the buttons put on even after I thought set one had already done all of its moving! I also had to re-learn how to take the trays off! After some time fussing around with them, I learned that it was easier to pry off the trays from the molar area on one side in the back of the mouth, then sort of work toward the front and unhook the trays from the buttons, then pull the tray off to the other side. It got easier with practice, and i can do it inconspicuously now without having to run off somewhere to hide

I am also happy to announce that since I had reported my concerns about my first set of aligners cracking, my second set has lasted through these two weeks with no problems My ortho had also commented on how she was impressed with the customer service at ortho clear (I have to admit, paying thousands of dollars for a product and services made me very up-front and picky about my treatment and I wasn't afraid to let her see that).

So far, so good! My boyfriend already says he that he can see the my teeth are moving... yay! I have my next appointment to get aligner sets 3 and 4 in one more week!

Hi Mike,

I live in Philadelphia and just went for a consultation in Yardley yesterday (near my work); I was quoted $4300 for OC. My insurance pays $1500 but this is still more than you are paying. What dentist/ortho are you using? I am set to go back for the impressions next week, but if I can get into see your ortho maybe i will cancel it. Did you say it includes the teeth whitening, too?

Thanks for posting, everyone. This site has been very helpful!

Nicole,

I am seeing Dr. Brogan, really cool guy, knows his stuff, and teaches dentistry a few days a week to grad students. The location is in Roxborough (near Manayunk), on Ridge, and the phone is 215-482-8500. They also have another office I believe near Blue Bell maybe? His quote did not include whitening, but to be honest, my teeth have always been white (people used to ask me over ten years ago if I had bleaching done), and never a cavity (knock on wood). So I really didn't inquire about the whitening, but you may be able to negotiate it into your deal once you meet with him. If you want to email me at mikwer1@aol.com, I can give you another information you may need.

Well today went well, I taught the beginnings of cell division and cell respiration, and despite a few minor lisps, I don't believe I drew much attention. The trays, yesterday, went in well, shocked me with a little bolt of pain (purely pressure), but rapidly adjusted and the sensation went down. I actually (in a sick way) enjoyed the sensation b/c in a way, it told me those goofy, plastic trays were actually working quite well!! Amazing technology. As for my wife, she has no idea I have them in!!! She only knew I was interested, and since I am paying (with my allowance...lol) I didn't mind keeping it to see how well they are disguised. After a month, I may break and tell her I have been wearing them...my prediction, she will be so impressed with their invisibility, she will agree to get on orthoclear herself. She has a beautiful smile already, but I think orthoclear may help her bite. We shall see.

Last night sleeping was tricky. Not sure if it was the excitement, or the nagging pain of my tooth fibers being stretched. I took a huge 400 mg Ibuprofen that she had left over from a knee surgery done following Pilates. It did help, coupled with a melatonin, to get me to sleep for a few hours. We shall see how 2nite goes.

I am keeping them in between 22-23 hours daily. I brush twice a day, and remove them for 15 mins (breakfast), 35 minutes (lunch), home for cleaning (10 minutes), and dinner (45 minutes). Do the math, its about 22 hours and some change. The bottom molar on one side wasnt quite fitting well, so I chomped down on it gently but with pressure, and I think I actually helped to mold it better, so now it sticks and doesnt pop off! Cool stuff.

Ok I am starving. Yes, I can agree with many of you that say you may lose weight with these trays on!! I already cut out my hot tea in the morning, as well as my inbetween class snacks. Hmmm...I am 182, 6'1 now, let's see where I end up at the end of treatment. I still would like to know my total number of trays, didnt get that info yet. If anyone wants pics, I have a digital camera. I noticed as I googled orthoclear, there arent many pictures of amateurs progres, as well as the trays themselves....Ok time to eat, I am STARVING !!! Thanks again for your posts, and if there is anything else you wanna know, ask away!! Almost Friday...... :-D

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your response! I called your doctor's office, but after realizing how far away it would be from Yardley, I decided I'd just go with my guy for convenience. They seemed very nice, tho.

I hope your treatment is going well. Is it still painful? Did your wife notice yet? Two things i am worried about: the trays ripping or cracking and the difficulty in pulling them off. Also, i love my morning tea. Do you think i could still drink tea with them on?

I am excited to get my impressions taken tomorrow. I will probably get them on by X-mas time (hubby says it's my Christmas present ;~). I am 28, too, and i never had braces (ortho said i wouldn't need them), but in my early 20s they began to shift a little after my wisdom teeth were taken out.

Okay. Good luck!

Nicole

Has anyone had problems with their trays being delayed with delivery? I read on OC's website that there would be no delays in production due to the earthquake recently.

I had an appointment scheduled for tomorrow with my ortho for my new trays (6 weeks since my last visit). I called to verify that my trays had arrived to make sure I wasn't going to waste a visit; OC has had a very poor track record with the timely delivery of my aligners.

And whaddya know? NO ALIGNERS! I'm so frustrated, I could just spit. Okay. I just spit. My mouth is so dry I can't get much saliva worked up anyhow. I sure don't feel any less frustrated now.

My ortho's office is going to contact OC to find out where my aligners are. Grrr....

apparently orthoclear has guarenteed on time delivery. if the aligners are not recieved when promised the case is free. so, you may want to see about a discount.

No problem Nicole, convenience is important. It will be a week today, and she hasn't noticed!!! Amazing stuff. Hot tea in the morning may have to be cut out, but I noticed if you drink cold tea drinks it helps if you wash your mouth out with water to keep staining from occurring. No students have said a word yet, so another good sign. NO cracking or tearing, they hold up great!! After about a week, the pain subsides, so I can sleep w/o aid now. If you have any other questions, ask away!! Gotta run to get ready for today!!

I got a call later that day from my ortho. My aligners (4 and 5) suddenly appeared at my ortho's office the evening before my appointment. Weird. Maybe they'd been misplaced at the office.

Apparently with OrthoClear, they send instructions to the orthodontist regarding which teeth need to be 'shaved' with each pair of aligners. My ortho took one look at my 'shaving diagram' and said, "Holy Cow!". When your ortho says something like this about your treatment, it can't be good.

I had to get a lot of teeth 'slenderized'- between seven teeth on the bottom, between nine teeth on the top. My ortho kept apologizing during the entire procedure. Surprisingly enough, it didn't hurt. It felt more like my teeth were getting power flossed.

Needless to say, it is much easier to floss now!

Hey eas423,

I didn't ask my ortho about the guarantee. I forgot! Hey Smitty, where did you hear about the guarantee?

Wow Christine! That's a lot of teeth to have shaved!!

It's been 2 days since my last visit. I too had to have my two front teeth shaved... again. 2mm more this time. I think I need to have it done once more for a total of 5mm. It's good to know that others are having this done too! It does feel strange, but no real discomfort. It also beats having to have teeth extracted (as one ortho recommended for me at a prior consultation)!

I got my 3rd and 4th set of aligners as well. Maybe I'm weird, but I absolutely LOVE the feeling of a brand new set of aligners. Although the tenderness after a day or so does bother me when trying to eat. Strangely, I'm experienceing a bit more tenderness with this set of aligners, especially in the molar area on the right side (at least I know they're working though!). On this set, I noticed that the aligner doesnt quite fit all the way down on the second to the last molar on my bottom right side. And when I eat, that molar is so tender! It looks as if the aligner is trying to lift the molar higher or something. So cool! I'd like to see if, by the end of these 3 weeks, the molar fits snug within the aligner.

Again, since reporting the first set cracking, I have had absolutely no problems with my newer ones! And delivery has been prompt as well.

Happy OrthoClearing!

Christine--or anybody! Please help! I've been reading all the comments on both Invisalign and OrthoClear...now I just don't know what to do! I've called many orthos in my area, and it doesn't seem like any offer free consultations that include xrays, etc. The two places I've been to have just looked at my teeth and threw out an estimate ($6100 at an ortho for an 18 month treatment, and $3800 at a general dentist for a 9 month treatment). The dentist mentioned that his treatment is a "partial" treatment, where only the front anterior teeth are moving and the back teeth remain constant. That seemed a little fishy to me. Plus, he mentioned that I would need a permanent bond retainer put in once the treatment is over. Has anyone else had to do that? I'm a little skeptical about this dentist, even though he spent an hour talking to me whereas the ortho took 15 minutes, if that. I think I'll look around a little more to see if I can find a happy medium. I'm also trying to figure out whether I should go with OrthoClear or Invisalign. After reading the comments on this site, it seems that OC is less cloudy than Invisalign, but tend to tear more frequently and aren't always on time when you're ready for your next trays. Is this a correct assumption? If so, which way do you think the scale leans? OC or Invisalign?
Thanks! Your opinions/comments are very helpful!
