Hi! Its been 3 months since my first posts here. Ive just put in tray 9 of 12U/14L. Very excited that in 2 weeks I will be getting my final 3 uppers, which will signal the end of closing the gap between my front teeth. Its very telling that few people post much after there initial appoinments... not much happens. If you follow the rules and keep them in enough, they move right along, every time you switch trays hurts a few days, then its back to waiting for the next switch. At my last visit, I was scolded for not having them in enough... I typically have them in for 21 hours a day, with the exception of weekends when visiting friends sometimes means long drawn out meals and multiple courses. In the past I would wait until getting home to brush and put the trays back in, but now I just excuse myself, put them back, and brush when I get home. The thought of it was kind of gross at first, but its not so bad, and it can easily be an extra 2 hours with the trays in, while just sitting around talking. Other than that not much to comment on, though with 3 trays to go on top, The teeth will have to move very quickly to close the whole way. Ah, also, just got back from a weeklong trip to California. Flying with them is a nightmare, and I was paranoid the whole time that I would lose them at a restaurant. I followed the advice here to bring the previous tray just in case I lose my current, but then I also brought my next tray, in case I lost the current tray at a point it made more sense to skip forward rather than backward. This made me more paranoid because now I had 2 trays to lose. But all ended well, though it was miserable flying for 7 hours and not eating since I didnt want to brush the teeth in the little dirty bathroom.

Cant wait to be finished though.

Hi All,
I'm a 34 year old girl from London, UK and am just completing my first set of trays this week. And so far so good. I am due to wear 13 upper and 9 lower, taking a little over 6 months. Not sure if any shaving will be needed - my dentist was very blase about it, but I must admit that I am not a big supporter of it in principle.
For those of you thinking of how it will be at the start, it's really not that bad. The first 3 days my teeth really ached when I put the tray back in after eating, but then suddenly the pain just goes away on day 3, and it was only temporary. Easily solved by not taking the trays out very often! I simply brush the tray each morning and evening with my toothbrush and toothpaste and am having no problems with keeping them clean. I was given four containers by my dentist and find that it's always useful to have one handy to pop the brace in to when I'm eating, especially on the go at work, restaurants etc. Keep one in my handbag for such moments!
Really looking forward to changing to the next tray in a few days time - now the pain has gone it feels like there is no progress...I am cool that you don't move too early to the new one, but am sure looking forward to feeling the effect again to remind me that I am making progress.
If anyone would like a recommendation of where my dentist is and cost in central London let me know. I got a quote from two leading London dentists and one was £1000 more expensive than the other! He claimed that he was worth the extra cost as he doesn't like shaving teeth and works with Invisalign to get a better programme than they would sort without his input. Maybe, and maybe not, but £1000 meant I went with the other dentist!!

Ricky, You can ask your dentist to file the spots on your attachments that are preventing your teeth from closing properly.

The speeding up of any form of orthodontic treatment is a really bad idea. Very little of what you experience tells you anything about what is going on where you can't see. Any form of orthodontic movement involves the cellular break down and rebuilding of bone this process needs time to work properly. There are many things that can go wrong if you do it to fast - but even if you are very lucky and most don't happen you will not have a good long term result. The bone will not have a chance to stabilise and as soon as you stop wearing your trays your teeth will start drifting back to their original position. Sorry to be a bully but want you to have the best outcome

I haven't personally worn them but know several people who have and my understanding is that they are quite easy to get in and out. They only do small adjustments at a time so are not that tight on your teeth. Yes you do need to clean every time you eat - but this is something you should be doing with any form of orthodontic appliance as the biggest problem with moving teeth is the associated tooth decay and gum disease from poor cleaning. Many people end up with straight but rotten teeth.

I am not a dentist, but am a final year dental student who has done special courses related to ortho and invisalign. The trays move different teeth at different times in the process as it is not safe to move them all at the same time if the trays are tight enough to stay on then it is most likely that they are doing something.. if your course is only 1yr then the movements are likely to be very small. Every person will have a different level of 'discomfort' with any ortho sounds like you are one of the lucky ones, enjoy.

OMG!! I'm in week 28 of a 42 week Invisalign program, 2 weeks per set. It's going great. I've got the buttons all over my front teeth -- and no one can tell. My speech adjusted within a few hours -- and my job as a voice over talent means I have clients who critically direct my vocal performance -- they can't tell! (I'm the voice of Chevy Dealers, AccuWeather, BP Oil, Burger King, etc)

When I read these posts about people complaining that they forget to put them back in after eating...well, they're stupid! They likely lose their car keys too, so they shouldn't drive, right? I've also read about people who panic and can't get them out? I had trouble the first day as well. After day 2, I pop them both out in literally 2 seconds -- and I have no fingernails to speak of! Plus, I have all my wisdom teeth, so my retainers reach ALL the way back in my mouth, making it theoretically harder. These same people who panic about taking them out probably panic when using eye drops and would never dream of wearing contact lenses. Get over it!

My message to newbies who are reading these replies is this: if you're an idiot, don't use Invisalign. If you're reasonably compliant and want the results without having traditional braces, do it!

Whiners need not apply!

I eat out for lunch every day and my wife and I enjoy a nice restaurant dinner a couple time a week. I wear my retainers to the restaurant and keep them in during my ****tails. When the appetizer arrives, I pop them out with my thumb and forefinger, place them in my front shirt pocket (I wear a button down shirt and tie every day). AFter the meal and I'm done with dessert, I swish with a swig from my water glass and put them back in right at the table. It takes seconds and no one notices or cares. Back at home, I take them out to brush my teeth properly before putting them back in. It's NOT a big deal; don't make it one!!

Dozens of earlier posts have these drama queens whining about forgetting to put them back in or how they hurt for a couple whole days when switching to a new set...holy crap! Please disregard these frail, nuerotic whiners and listen to me, a Normal Person; Invisalign is great! And no, I'm not being compensated for saying this: I am motivated to write this post by being disgusted with the number of frail whiners out there.

P.S. I'm 48 years old and believe you're never too old to pursue looking your best!

I'm on my second day of invisalign with my first tray of 16 on the bottom and 14 on the top.. I have a few worries! I'm turning 20 shortly so am relatively young for an invisalign patient, I've moved orthodontists during the process and my first orthodontist wasn't the greatest.

I have strong reflex gags so the mould were torture and had to be re-done a few times, now I've got the trays I get the feeling she gave up on the lower moulds (the lower ones are the crooked ones!), they just don't seem to fit correctly I no theres supposed to be pressure but they don't align with my teeth! My bottom middle tooth sticks up a bit and the aligner doesn't really allow for this.. Also my wisdom teeth have come through more since my moulds in March I can feel the aligner pushing on one of them.. and could possibly be why they don't really fit my teeth well.. The top ones really suck on and feel great but the bottom ACHE! I didn't tell my new orthodontist as I was so excited to have them I didn't notice and he had said in the past the wisdom teeth shouldn't be a worry all though I'm not sure if he counted on the aligner covering them- and now he's on holiday! Should I put up with the pain and see if it gets better or cut the back of the aligner which covers the wisom tooth? haha I can't beleive I paid $8500NZ to get these and want to manhandle them with scissors!

Hey!! I am soon going to start invisalign but for now I've been shopping around at different orthos. The first ortho I went to was Dental Pride here in Manhattan and they quoted me $7200, which IMO is ridiculous! Then i went to another Ortho in Long Island and they are charging me $6,000, which is much better.

Thing is the first ortho i went to, Dental Pride, which i didn't like, told me that i would wear only invisalign during my treatment. The other ortho in Long Island says i may have to wear braces for about 2-3 months at the end of my treatment since invisalign is not perfect. At this ortho there are two orthodontists, father and son. The father being also an oral surgeon.

What do you guys think, Is it normal to have to wear braces for 2 months at the end of treatment?

P.S- I have crowding in my lower teeth and my top front teeth when i bite cover my lower teeth.

how long will it take me to wear a brace?
coz my four front teeth are not aligned?
does it depends on the dislocation of my teeth?

Hi all. I'm on the second set of aligners and just got 9 attachments put on last week. I noticed yesterday that there's a dark area under one. Is this likely to be tooth decay?

Has anyone else had this or felt that using Invisalign has caused decay or other damage to their teeth??

Feeling a little worried about side affects now....

I doubt it's tooth decay that quickly. I've had problems with my attachments where they weren't fully sealed on my teeth and food particles would get stuck underneath the attachment.

Poke around the attachment with floss, you may be able to find the gap and pull out what's under there.

If you drink a lot of tea or coffee, they can stain around the attachment, I used to carefully scratch it off

Just had the impressions done yesterday. Now have to wait for the results. Doc initially said he expected only 3 months to fix the small gap between my front teeth, but after reading a lot of these posts, I'm a little leery. Anyone in a similar boat to me? What's the shortest treatment course anyone's heard of? Any guesses how many trays expected to reduce 1.5 mm gap between front two teeth? I'm too excited/impatient to wait for the final verdict from Invisalign. Thanks!

I read some of these and I actually had to look up a picture of it to know if that's what people were REALLY talking about.

Here's my story. Braces for 2 years, got my metal retainer on(behind the teeth), the top one broke and for four years I went through at least 10 clear retainers (my ortho sells them $50 each, but was kind enough to give them to me for free)

FINALLY. I'm at a mature enough age not to lose them and I have had the same one for a month. I had it to close my gap in my front two teeth, the gap I would say was..Well I don't know how big (thinking 2mm), but It was definitely noticeable. After my first week with it in, I went back and it was almost perfectly closed, but he put pressure points on two teeth to move them more!

When I first put my retainer in the first time, the pain was incredible (basically the retainer DIDN'T want to go in, I had to force it in and it wanted to POP out.) The second time was much the same, but it ached a lot more, probably due to sore gums from moving my teeth so much.

So, I'm a bit confused about the trays, but I'm guessing those metal things and the moulding goop, but I guess I only needed one "tray" because I had braces before.

So Someone asked about the quickest use of a retainer, I've will have had mine a month when I get it off.

Oh yea, I just wanted to add, that yes it hurt when I put them in for the first time (just like braces hurt when I got them) but the pain doesnt even compare to when I smile and how amazed people are at the fact I now have no more space in such a short time AND it took most people that I work with everyday a week or two to even notice I had something on my teeth (the fact it was shiny gave it away)

So all in all, the pain was way worth the results, and it goes away shortly after. I didn't have any trouble taking it out, before I got the pressure points put on, I could take it out with my teeth.

IT did however, change my bite a bit, but once I get my mental retainer, my bite will go back into place. So when I took out my retainer for the first time to eat it was the strangest feeling in the world.

It's probably not a good thing, but I eat with mine in, I just carry my toothbrush and paste with me everywhere because it was kinda hard to eat with my bite changed.

Hi, I just got my Invisalign yesterday and was pleasantly surprised at the ease of removal and reattachment. After taking them off 3 times, I think I have a good hang of them. They do hurt initially when you take them off. You do have to use your nails to ply them off and then they snap off and on. But it's too bad after a few days.

The dentist told me to brush after eating, but at work when I only eat liquidy foods, I simply rinse well and then put them on again.

In all, the pain is manageable with pain medication and it's day 2 for me today and I'm already noticing that the pain is far less.

It's day 3 for me and my invisaligns. Like many others, I've had a sore tongue for the past 2 days. The edge of the invisalign trays are surprisingly sharp and my tongue has been scraping it all day. I followed the advice others had to use a nail file to smooth the edges out a bit, and it works! I just tried it this morning and can definitely say it has helped with tongue scraping.

I think I'll need to file them a little more to get a truly smooth edge, but this technique does work.

Also, day 3 and removing and attaching the trays are getting easier every day. Teeth are still sore when I take the trays out and chewing is still a little painful. But nothing that an little pain meds won't take care of.

Just an overview, I am scheduled to wear 27 trays (yes a long time!) because I have lots of crowding in my mouth. I have 6 buttons, 4 on top, 2 on bottom.

And like many others, this forum has been so helpful for fellow invisalign patients. It feels really good to read about others experiences and find such supportive people all around! So thanks!

If I ever had to choose between traditional braces and invisalign... I Would NEVER pick traditional braces... egh.. I am on my 3rd tray on the bottom and top and I have 20 trays more to go and let me tell you... It is so comfortable, no irritation to the gums the only concern that I have now I brush and floss like a maniac. It gets to the point where I don't even want to eat because then I'd have to brush my teeth and the trays... I do have 5 attachments and one of them fell out once and that attachment was on my crown... Orthodontist said I don't have to get it back on its not a must but i still did and I have not had a problem since. Wearing them at first would cause discomfort, It only hurt when I put them back in and chewed on a chewy. But after my teeth adjusted to the new tray i didnt have any problems. As far as taking them on or off I got it down the first time I took them out in the ortho office. So that is no problem for me. My lisp went away pretty quick too but I've seen people wearing them for a while and they still have it. It depends on the case I guess. And one last thing, if you do decide to get invisalign you will have an urge to change the trays sooner than your actual due date. Don't do it, it will screw up the treatment. It takes 2-3 weeks for the teeth to adjust to the trays, do as your ortho says and you will literally see results in 2 weeks. Good luck!
