I'm on my second day. Plastic in my mouth is very annoying to the point where all I can think about is when I can take it out... then I think there are still months left to go. It doesn't hurt so much but my teeth and gums feels very uncomfortable and suffocated, and it is hard to talk. I sound muffled and lispy. Is that normal, and does speech improve after awhile? Also, what are buttons?

I'm in my 3rd week (2nd set of trays). I had a lot of pain the first week--the lower tray was lacerating the underside of my tongue. I had the ortho's technician grind down the tray a bit, so it feels a lot better. Regarding your speech: I've had trouble with that too. My speech isn't quite as "lispy" now as it was at the beginning, but it's not completely normal either, at least to my ear. The trays collect saliva, and this affects my speech. I'm hoping this will improve over time. Buttons are little cement plugs that the ortho puts on your teeth, which helps move them. I got them right away, and they are there all the time--and unsightly, in my opinion. The buttoms hurt a lot in the first week, as you really feel them when the trays come out and you try to eat. But that's much better now. Like you, I spend a lot of time thinking about the trays and wishing I could just grab a cup of coffee like I used to. I think this is going to be a very long year for me.

well it's somewhat comforting to know that someone else is going through the same thing. all my friends got braces when they were much younger, I kinda wish I did, tho my teeth were perfect until my wisdom teeth started. Oh well, just gotta pull through!

Things will get better. I wanted to rip my face off the first few days, but know i am on 9/14U 9/19L and i hardley notice them anymore. I know you think you will never get to the point where you don't notice them, but i did not either and now its like second nature. I do notice a slight lisp at the beginning of each new set. I was hoping that would get better but no pain no gain.

Hello im so glad I found this site, im on day 2, Im only getting the upper teeth done, he said I only need 12 trays, but he says this will be reviewed incase my teeth goes off track, he also said at the end of the treatment he will put a permanent bar behind my teeth - has anyone else been told this. I had railway tracks 10 years ago, but after 2 years my teeth shifted back, so I have gone for these, they cost £2,900 in Northern Ireland.

Hi everyone

just joined this site... it's day 3 of my first set of aligners, the pressure is there but is bearable...i am not looking forward to taking these things out to eat everytime and having to brush, especially in restaurants.... giving up on snacks is hard, but i wonder about when i want to go out and have some drinks, is it harmful to have them out for a few hours in a row???

my case is 29 upper and 18 lower...don't know how i am going to put up with this for a year and a bit....

sorry all, i just needed an outlet to vent how i felt... i go to the dentist in two weeks to get the buttons put in and some spacing and will get trays 2 and 3... seems like its gonna be a long year with some sacrifice and lifestyle changes....

bye for now

Invisalign works great if you follow the 22hour/day plan closely. If you try to leave them out too long the teeth will start to move back and then you need more days to compensate. So its best to change your style a bit if you want good results.

I just finished about the same number of aligners as your plan, took exactly one year for me. I thought it would be a long time at the beginning too, but suprisingly I used to the new lifestyle and the year has gone by quickly! My teeth never have looked so good and they are in better condition (gums too) and whiter by brushing/flossing everytime I take them out to eat or drink something. So I plan to continue that style to keep 'em looking so great now too!

Yes its been a small sacrifice, but its been worth it!

thanks badboy for your reply...its inspiring to hear about your results...just dont know how you all r doing this!!!!

22hrs seems like a long time to keep them in...so did u rush ur meals at the restaurant, and what about the bar or all nite events, even a wedding reception, holidays.???

i think i need to stop stressing out here, too anxious and am overthinking everything..hope i am not alone

I forgot to add included in the price is that I get my teeth whitened at the end which will be great, he said the trays are suitable for the whitening solutions. Im on day 5 and im going back tomorrow for a check-up after that he said he doesnt need to see me for about another 2 weeks then it will be 3 months. I have found them not as bad as I thought, I have 4 buttons on my teeth which really hurt the inside of my mouth when I take the tray out, but I think this works as a good deterant for keeping it in, otherwise I think I would be removing it a lot.

Oh I forgot to ask has anyone ever received their pictures from Invisalign site, I was wondering if anyone ever got theirs emailed to them. My dentist was very quick in showing what my teeth will look like after each stage and there was comments typed in on the screen which I never got a chance to read

Yes and I and some others here have successfully used the aligners as whitening trays with the standard bleaching gel. You have to wait though until any attachments/buttons are removed otherwise the enamel under the button will not get bleached.

I and others have also requested AVI video files from the doctor that have a series of the computer generated images of the predicted teeth movement for your individual case, one frame per aligner. Great for following along during the process and seeing what teeth will move with each aligner stage and looking ahead. The doctor can produce these from their clinicheck software, even my doctor's office assistant learned how to do it from an invisalign rep and emailed me the files. Ask for it!

I've got another question. Haven't had much luck with my old questions but here goes..

Has anyone started treatment with a chipped tooth? My front upper has a decent chip in the corner and I was told to wait until after treatment to fix the chip. I'm wondering what I'm gonna use as a retainer right after they fix it. Seeing as how I have to get new molds done after I fix the chip, what the heck am I going to wear until my retainers come in? My teeth are sure to move while I'm waiting a few weeks for retainers.

I haven't read anything on this forum about this problem. Worth a shot I guess. Thanks all. (^_^)

It would be best to fix the chipped tooth with a bonding before getting the impressions to start invisalign if possible due to the reasons you mention.
I too had a small chipped upper front tooth but didn't get it bonded until after the original invisalign series was done. Fortunately though my upper aligners had room for the bonded tooth, maybe that can be requested to make the length of both teeth the same in preparation for that. However if you can get bonding first before impressions that would have to be the easiest route.

Sorry, I should have been more specific.

Actually, I'm on tray 8 right now. I did ask him about the tooth and fixing it before my impressions because I had to get some stuff done anyway..he said to wait until after treatment to get it bonded because the tooth in question is a really twisted tooth in front and it would make sense to wait until after it moves into place before fixing it.

Still, I wonder if I'm just going to wear nothing until my retainers come in. After my initial treatment, depending on refinements, I'm going right to get bonded then impressions. I'm sure that the trays I have now wont fit because they are grooved where the chip is. Maybe I can burn a hole thru my trays where the groove is so the bonded portion can poke through...or maybe not.

If I drink anything with ice in it there is an extremely noticable sensation on the top. I assumed that it was due to slight contraction of the aligner due to the temperature change. I use a thin line of dental wax along the back inside edge of my lower aligners to keep them from irritating my tongue.

Hi everyone, first off thank you to everyone for all of their information, I have been reading through all the previous pages of posts for days now. I just got my first set of aligners on Tuesday and like everyone else, I'm wondering what I got myself into. I have 18 for the top and 22 for the bottom, so I realize it won't be forever, but its hard to remember that right now. My tongue and lower gums are so sore I hate to even talk now (and I love to talk)... I hope it gets better!!

Does anyone have a strange feeling in their top aligner when they drink?? Mine seems to feel like it gets tighter when I drink water, really strange!

Talk to everyone soon.

If you are already into the treatment then yes an option would be when you reach the last alginer in the series and have bonding done to lengthen a tooth, the doctor may be able to cut and modify the last aligner to fit over it. That should work to hold the teeth until the retainer comes in, it shouldn't take more than a week or two after the impressions for the retainer are made - some dental labs can do it even quicker if a rush job is requested for a special case.

I had planned on doing that (slight cutting of the aligner) after my bonding on a chipped tooth after my initial aligner series was done, but my aligners had room for the lengthened tooth already. New impressions were made after the bonding for a refinement series of aligners last month for me and I'm awaiting them - still using my final initial series aligners, they have lasted well since my uppers were done 4 months ago while finishing my lowers!

Yeah, I hear ya. I have 28 lower and 37 upper so I have to sit tight with my last lower tray for a few months. Good thing the chipped tooth is on the top. What stinks is that as the tooth rotates the chip becomes more and more visible.

I hope my bottoms last that whole time. I've already cracked 2 of my bottom trays so far...

I started treatment with a chipped tooth. The ortho said that after I am all done, he will fix it (i.e., after any refinements). If that is included in my treatment price, even better! I really think that Invisalign makes my chippped tooth less noticable. I can't even tell that it is chipped when the aligners are in. When the aligners are out, it is a LOT more obvious (although we are our own worst critic).

Mine got chipped by my trumpet mouthpiece flying out of my horn and hitting my tooth my senior year of college marching band on a fast 'horns up'. At the time, finishing the season without having to deal with getting it fixed (without insurance) was definitely not a priority. So, I just had the dentist polish the rough stuff off. But, it will look dorky to have the tooth chipped when my teeth are straighter!!!

Jeni, I wish my story was that pleasant. Mine got chipped during a sparring match. Sure enough, the one day I don't wear my mouthpiece I get nailed in the head hard as hell and I end up getting a concussion. It's natural for you to bite down when this happens. Well, I bit down and when I woke up on the ground I wondered why I had a couple hard fragments in my mouth. I got helped up and spat out pieces of teeth. 4 chipped in total. I fixed the others but was told to wait on my top front until after any invisalign treatment. Needless to say, that wasn't one of my better days.

You're right any spaces are less noticeable with the trays in. Mine on the other hand is noticeable even with the tray in..and it keeps getting worse as my teeth get better. Oh well, gotta keep on keeping on I guess.

It's my second day and I don't like it at all. I feel strange in my mouth and that plastic makes me feel thirsty..
My ortho didn't mention the 22 hour rule, he just told me to wear it except eating..but he didn't mention I should change my life style about snaps and drinks...
anyway, I try to wear it 20 hours per day..and I have to take it off may times for breaks otherwise I will be crazy..

I wonder how you cracked not one but 2 trays. I can't imagine my trays cracking - had 19 top/16 bottom on first series and now 8 top/5 bottom refinement series.

I wonder if there might be a manufacturing variation that would make a set of aligners susceptible to cracking?

I think the amount of pressure on the aligners that could eventually cause cracking varies with the individual, since some are more prone to teeth grinding perhaps unconsciously during sleep.
My last upper aligner of my primary invisalign series has lasted for 5 months now of wear and shows no sign of cracking, lasting far longer than I expected. I hope my revision aligners come in later this month though, I don't want to push it beyond 6 months!

I am due to change into my second set of aligners today. My dentist has told me that I need to do the moulding every 2 weeks before I changes into new aligners. That sound pretty troublesome to me not to mention the unpleasantness of the procedure.
Is this a standard practice?

I was wondering what others thought about tipping your dentist/orthodontist after your invisalign procedure.

I couldn't be happier with my dentist and all he is doing (on 15/18), and I believe it would be a nice thing to give him a tip after all is said and done. The only concern is that I am paying $5500 +tax for the entire Invisalign process. As a college student that is the single most substantial thing I have had to pay for outside of school.

I guess I am looking for other peoples comments and opinions on the idea of tipping your dentist/orthodontist and how you feel about it. It definitely wouldn't be a cash tip, more like a gift certificate to a favorite resturant.

Thoughts?

aloha

I have no idea what this means. What is "the moulding"? There should procedure required every 2 weeks. A

re you talking about IPRs which may be included in your plan and would be done at specific points prior to changing aligners? This involves making a very small amount of space between specific teeth so that there will be space for the target movement.

I think it's so interesting that not all orthos and dentists share the clinchecks with their patients (mine didn't, but i'll definitely be asking on my next visit!). How many of you saw the clincheck and asked for alterations of the treatment because you weren't satisfied with what you saw? In a way I'm glad I wasn't involved because I always appreciate that my office visits are so quick, and I'd also hope I could trust my very reputable orthodontist with the task of approving the aligners. But still, I'm wondering if most people have a say in their treatment?

Dyingsun16 -
I personally wouldn't tip my dentist/orthodontist, but if they did a great job, maybe consider writing a glowing letter of recommendation. Often I see doctors use letters/quotes from their patients on their websites, etc. Referrals seem to mean the most to them as future business is important to the practice succeeding.
Just giving my 2 cents.

What I mean is "doing a model of my teeth with modeling clay". How often do you need to have one made?

Impressions are normally only done once prior to all the aligners being manufactured. After all the aligners have been worn, new impressions would be taken of the teeth either for a refinement series or for making retainers. They aren't needed every 2 weeks!

I'm on day 3 of my first tray (of 23 upper and lower) and I'm starting to wonder if my moulds might've had a flaw. Does that ever happen? I'm having a sharp edge issue in the back of my lowers and it's not just a jagged edge that i can file down. It's more like the back left of the tray is sticking up ever so slightly so the side isn't lying down flat against my tooth. Everytime it touches my tongue it kills. I've come to terms that my tongue will be cut for two weeks but I wouldn't be able to handle it if it was every tray for the whole year. Has anyone experienced it? I'm worried all my trays will have this issue. If so, is it something my tongue will get used to? Looks like I'll be trying the dental wax, (and adding one more step to the already lengthy eating process). Thanks SO much in advance for any insight, this board has saved my life for the past four days.
(in case anyone is interested, mine cost $5600, insurance paid $1800, and I'm in SF, Cali).
