My purpose for invisilign is crowding in bottom teeth. It hurt a bit when my ortho had to file in between my teeth to make room for movement. When I had my clincheck appointment and my ortho showed me how my teeth would look after the treatment I was amazed. My top teeth are pretty straight and I'm tempted to stop wearing the top trays but I'm going to stick with it.....

Okay, just about finished with week two. I feel like I could have put the second set in during the first week! My teeth only hurt for a day or so, then the trays were easy to remove and replace! I'm eager to put the second set in, but will wait the full 2 weeks. Comfort: The trays made a blister on the roof of my mouth behind my front teeth. This went away after about 5 days. I have a tendancy to grind my teeth with them on, but other than that I forget about them often. If after two weeks I hardly notice them, I'm sure it just gets easier and easier. Now if I can just figure out how to say words that begin with "FR" Like French Fries...you can definately hear a speach impediment with those letters!

I lost two buttons in the dentist office while they were showing me how to put them in and take them out. The two were on the same side, uppers. The dentist said I'd be fine without them since they fit so snug. Anyone else have this happen? I don't want to be wasting time if I REALLY need the buttons?~David

Dave, you really do need those attachments (buttons). They serve a specific purpose, which is to rotate or pull up or down an individual tooth. Invisalign alone, without the attachments, is not good at those movements, so you may/will not get the desired results without them. Make sure your dentist replaces them so that you are receiving your prescribed treatment. Snugness of the aligner alone is not sufficient. If it was, why would Invisalign bother with the attachments? I'm always concerned about the knowledge base of dentists (v. orthos) when performing orthodontia.

According to Invisalign.com"Attachments - Forms bonded onto front or back surfaces of teeth to help achieve certain types of tooth movement with Invisalign®." If I were you, I'd insist that my dentist put the buttons/attachments back on. They are them to help rotate/move your teeth, not to keep them snug. quote: Originally posted by BraveDave: I lost two buttons in the dentist office while they were showing me how to put them in and take them out. Yes I have used this tool. When I first had my attachments put on, I was having a real hard time getting the upper tray out. I called my ortho and told them of the trouble I was having, and they told me to come back in and they would give me a tool to aid in removing the tray. This was on tray set number 2, and I'm now on set number 9. I keep the pick in my Invisalign case, and still use it occaisionally, especially for the first couple of days after a moving to a new set. It works well. quote: Originally posted by justskipee: Hey I found a orthodontic supply store that sells a safe tool to remove invisible braces:http://www.essix.com/orstore/ShowItem.aspx?productID=ART01 Anyone used this thing?

Okay, just called my ortho, and this is the scoop regarding buttons. I have invisalign express (just moving my front teeth because I didn't wear my retainer when I had braces 10 years ago), and my ortho said that with invisalign express they include the buttons automatically, the same ones for every express setup, regardless of weather you need them or not. He said that he knows what movements my teeth need and that because my trays are so tight they are not needed for my particular movements. In some casses he said he would definately have the patient right back in to replace them immediately, but every case is differnt. Since he's done well over 100 invisalign treatments I will defer to his knowledge. Thanks again everyone! quote: Originally posted by Kimbob: Dave, you really do need those attachments (buttons). BraveDave, I'm glad to hear your ortho gave you a good explanation of his choice in not being concerned about the attachments. I didn't realize that Invisalign Express included attachments in all cases. Seems odd, but you're lucky you don't really need them. I have 8 on the top and 4 on the bottom and would be happy not to have them, but that's what my treatment calls for. Sounds as if you have a good ortho. Good luck with your treatment!

I don't know about drinking but I smoke. Although, the best way to avoid stains is to quit, I know that it is not realistic to say "just quit". (cause I know I won't)I smoke with the alingners in, I use Efferdent to clean my aligners twice a day and I use one of those cigarette filters religously when I smoke with the aligners in. My aligners are just as clear as the day I put them in. Hope that answers your question.

I do take them out for red wine, but everything else I just have a glass of water handy and swish & swallow every now & then. Then after you're totally done, just take them out & brush everything. I think that's OK and probably better than leaving them out for too long. And I agree with the coffee comment. It feels wrong if you sip anything too hot with them in!Just put in the 3rd set (right before bed) and had no problems! Still a tad sore, but even just tension/soreness is relieved greatly by one Aleve. Bottoms up!

Is anyone else experiencing receding gums while using Invisalign? I had high exterior gums on my molars to begin with, but since starting my treatment about 5 weeks ago, my gums have receded even higher on my teeth. I'm paranoid that the fronts are now higher too! They probably are, but I can't be sure.I want straight teeth, so I'm willing to suck it up, but it's unfortunate that this is the necessary side effect in my case to get there.

The teeth movement occurs in the first three days of each set of aligners, the extra time you wear them is so that the bones and ligaments have time to heal so that you won't have bone loss or loose teeth, my ortho wants me to wear each set for 3 weeks... I hate flossing and brushing every time I have to put them back in.....When you take them out to eat put them in a tea cup of water.... this will keep them from getting dry and forming that white film on them. When I wake up in the morning I put them in a tea cup of peroxide while I brush, eat breakfast then brush and floss and I also brush the trays with a little toothpaste ..they stay crystal clear with this procedure...the main thing is to keep them wet so that they won't dry..

Me too. And when I started Invisalign I was told I had very healthy gums. This is making me nervous!

I wore braces when I was younger, but my teeth shifted more than I like so I'm getting them put back on. I'm 28 now and checked into invisalign myself. The orthodontist really discouraged me from getting them. Aside from cost, she said many patients will need braces afterwards due to invisalign not working properly. With the constant removing to eat, brush, floss, etc there is too much interference with proper treatment. If you don't wear them properly or miss a tray, your whole treatment is pretty much ruined. Plus, while they may make your teeth look straighter, invisalign may not correct the roots under the gums correctly. After hearing her talk about the disadvantages of invisalign, I decided to go the cheaper route and get clear braces. Because I've worn them before my treatment won't be as long, so it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

\My ortho told me the same thing and I have definately decided that I am going with the ceramic braces instead of Invisalign.

EXTREMELY HELPFUL information, when I first got my Invisalign trays. I'm now on week fifteen. Here's my two cents:1. Manage the pain! - These trays are going to create irritation, sores, and calluses on the inside of your mouth and around your tongue. They HURT! There's nothing you can do about that... but you CAN manage the pain. Take ibuprofen, vicodin, or other pain medicines to take the edge off. Don't be afraid to tell your dentist or doctor about the pain in order to get a prescription if it's really bothering you. If you need help sleeping, take a sleep aid, just not every day. 2. Cleaning is easy! - Don't bother with all those 'kits'. Just buy a toothbrush and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide for 89 cents. Each morning, when you wake, drop your trays into a small bowl/whatever. Add enough hydrogen peroxide to cover the trays, and let them sit while you do your morning routine. After a few minutes, you just brush the trays like you do your teeth, and your done. BONUS: You may even learn to like flossing through this experience... flossing relieves much of the pressure on your gums as your teeth move. 3. Change aligners on your weekends! - You will notice, especially with the first few sets, that changing to a new set of trays takes a toll on you. I found myself having trouble concentrating at work and sometimes irritable after changing sets. Part of this is simply the pain, but it's also the increased pressure on your teeth, gums, and head! Some people find it easier to deal with this by changing their aligners on their days off when they're not needing to concentrate on work. 4. You'll be pleased with the results! - After just fifteen weeks, my teeth already look way better! I'm definitely glad I did this! Good luck! Trevor C Portland, OR

I understand what you're saying here and don't mean to discredit what your orthodontist is saying (or suggest that I know more about orthodontia), but I think that "constant removing" is more than a little bit of an exaggeration. I've been wearing my aligners for about three months now and have remained about as consistent as possible with keeping them in. So far I haven't had any problems and in fact have seen improvement already in a relatively short amount of time. As far as I know the movement occurs within the first couple of days of each tray, meaning (I would think) that the short breaks you take for brushing and eating matter less and less as the two week period goes on. To say that most people would need traditional brace treatment after invisalign I think is too gross of a generalization. My orthodontist told me before treatment that there are options before all out braces that can be used to "touch up" anything that invisalign might not be able to do. He also said that there are many cases that he has done with invisalign alone. In short, my response is to each his own, but i advocate invisalign as a viable option for many who don't want metal in their mouths for upwards of two years.

I have the feeling that many orthodonists do not have enough experience or proper information on Invisalign. Many posters complain about aligners that are impossible to remove or too loose, buttons that are falling off and other problems.. Do these sorts of problems happen to patients that are getting treatment from orthos that are premier providers? or just with the more novice orthos.

I'm currently on tray #9 (I have 32 uppers and 9 lowers). I've definitely seen improvement over the four months I've been using invisalign. At my last visit, my orthodontist told me he wanted me to speed up my aligner wear from the typical 14 days to 9 days. Sounds great, but I've also read about the risk of bone loss and nerve issues with shorter wear-time and discussed this with him. I was told as long as the aligners fit "correctly" at day nine that it was ok to move on. Has anyone else had such recommendations by his/her ortho? While it would be nice to finish sooner, I don't want to jeopardize the health of my teeth! Any advice would be appreciated!

InvisalignGal,My ortho moved me to a ten-day cycle after keeping me on a two-week cycle for about 8 months. I've been on the ten-day cycle now for about 14 months and everything has progressed fairly smoothly. I just put in aligner no. 60 (out of 70), both the ortho and general dentist are impressed there's been no need for a revision, and the general dentist hasn't detected anything anomalous with x-rays. I gather there's enough variation in physiology for there to be different cycles (my ortho has most on a two-week cycle, a smaller number on a three-week cycle, and a very small number of us on a ten-day cycle).

Probably no guarantee or compensation but I would think that your ortho would offer to switch you to conventional braces which I hear that most Invisalign users have to finish up in anyway.
