I know how you feel with the buttons and it's so much easier to just say it but trust me - it does get better. I broke some nails too and felt like i was pulling my teeth out but I've been through about 10 sets of aligners since and don't have a problem anymore - haven't had a problem in a real long time. It's just takes time and practice. I'd hate to see you stop the process because of this. Try to give it some more time and see if it improves. quote: Originally posted by Tanesca: WOW, I am so glad I found this board! I just switched to my fifth set of aligners today, and I'm not a happy camper. I just had the buttons put on yesterday and I can't get the aligners out! I actually broke a fingernail trying to get them off. When I do get them off, it feels like I'm going to pull my teeth out, and it's extremely painful. I made an emergency appointment for this afternoon for a consultation. I can't go another 8 months with major pain just by removing them.

I am so relieved to find this board! I am on my first set of top/bottom aligners as of Tuesday and they are killing my mouth! I should also mention I had gum contouring surgery a couple weeks ago and I am still healing, but it's more of toothache, rather than my gums being tender. I am taking advil around the clock, but the pain never really stops. Sleeping is the absolute worst! I am only scheduled to use the aligners for 2 months because I am just having some minor correcting before I have 8 veneers put on...but even 2 months of this pain is scaring me! Could someone tell me when it's supposed to get better? It's been 2.5 days and I really don't feel like I've had any relief. I keep telling myself it's worth it, but I really want to claw them out the majority of the day. Has anyone else used the invisalign in conjunction with veneers? If so, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!

Hi dml021403,I don't have veneers, but I vividly remember the pain and soreness from the first few weeks. If your tongue is cut up and sore, I found that gargling with warm salt water a few times a day will help to heal it faster. I also use 320 grit sandpaper and wet sand the inside edges on the bottom trays. It made a HUGE difference.

i've had my trays for about 1yr now...i still find them uncomfortable,it is hard for me to talk, when i take them out to eat-my front teeth sometimes hurt so bad i cannot bite into anything-especially at the begging of a new tray cycle.i just had to get refitted and get new molds for the next stage of trays because some of the trays were not fitting properly.i sometimes regret that i started this--i wasnt told about all of the annoying sideeffects and that i would still be wearing these after 1year(initally at the molding stage i was told6-8months)-but when i went to then get my fisrt installment of trays--it was bumped up to 1year+. I constantly have a dry mouth, they give me badbreath, sometimes my teeth hurt really bad, but the most annoying thing is the way that I talk--sound like cindy brady!question: after the process is completed then what?it was recommended that I get a perminant retainer mounted behind my teeth so they dont shift back....was anyone else also told this?

i have a permanent retainer that was put on after my braces came off 15 years ago. it is glued to the back of my 4 front bottom teeth. it's basically a just a wire to keep those teeth from moving back. i guess it works because i only need to get invisalign on my top teeth.

after invisalign-it was suggested that i get the perminant retainer....is the perminant retainer bothersome? does it interfere with eating, brushing,or make u talk differently? thanks for the info i appreciate it--i personally don't know anyone that has the retainer-so any info would be great-before I take the plunge...

Lori... if your trays did not fit properly, you have pain putting the next one in and they make you talk funny...chances are you simply are not wearing them 20 hours or more per day. You probably are trying to move ahead too fast. Slow down and wear them more consistantly and they will become more comfortable. We see this sometimes with patients in our practice. I also know from firsthand experience when I had them. Good luck!

I had invisalign for 3 days for purely cosmetic reasons (to close small gaps on the sides of my uppers). My dentist presented invisalign as the 'only' option. He was vey vague about what 'reproximation' entailed. He proposed creating spaces in my lower (perfect) teeth without telling me that he'd actually be shaving off some of my teeth. I was so impressed with the computer animation that I pressed forward for a proposed 9 months of what I now perceive as oral torture. The invisalign chart proposed 8 such 'reproximations.' This is a bit excessive and irresponsible if the goal is to close two small gaps in my uppers. After he did one reproximation on the first day, I did a bit more homework and was upset to find out that he'd actually shaved my teeth. Having this knowledge beforehand would have been a dealbreaker. My advice to anyone looking at invialign to fix a small problem is not to forget about other options in cosmetic dentistry - bonding, veneers, crowns..... Completely restructuring your mouth just to fill small gaps isn't quite logical. I wish I'd read this message board before making this bad and painful investment. Use invisalign for real problems. Only then is it worth the pain and shaving of normal teeth.

Currently I have 13 sets of aligners for the top and bottom of my mouth. I'm a little confused because my orthodontist prescribed a 12 month treatment plan, but if you do the math, it'll only come out a total of 6 months. My total cost was about $5,100. So I guess I have two questions: 1.) Why do I have a 12 month treatment plan when I only have 6 months worth of aligners? 2.) Should it be cheaper since I only have 13 sets of aligners. (I've read the board and have seen a lot of people that have over 20 aligners costing about 5 grand). How does the pricing work? Thanks for any insight!

no, they usually start working on the back teeth first and then they work on the front. you shud ask your orth. to show you the process on the computer. that's what i did.

Hi I've been reading these posts all day and I'm considering getting invisalign.I would really like for someone to be completely thorough and honest about the pain. I've had insomnia all my life and it's started to cause health problems for me because I don't get enough sleep as it is. My main concern is making myself a nut case and basically putting my health at risk from wearing invisalign. I don't want to go from not enough sleep to none for a year and a half. I know it will be rough at first but I want to here from people who have been doing it a while. When you are like 8 - 9 weeks in does it still take 3 to 4 days for the pain to subside after inserting a new retainer? Also, I've been to 3 orthos. 1 said I need to extract a tooth and 2 said I didn't have to. I think the 2 that said I didn't have to are telling me what I want to here because they know I don't want to extract. I don't trust any of these orthos because it just seems like they just want to make the sell. Does anyone know a good ortho in Austin TX? Sorry for the long post, thanks

I live in Austin, am on tray # 6. So far it has gone pretty good. My teeth are really moving. Its amazing that no one ever notices. The pain with each tray has only been for a few hours. But then, different people react differently to pain. If you want to discuss in detail, email me at karman@bluebottle.com. Can recommed my dentist. He has the best dental office I have ever been in.

Slowdive, the pain is tolerable for me so far and I just got mine 2 days ago. As soon as I heard my trays were in, I took some Tylenol the morning of when they were going to fit my trays in. Ive been taking Tylenol as prescribed per the bottle and I have now problems yet. Hope this helps out.

I am in the DC area and I was wondering if anybody could give me a ballpark of what prices would be and if anyone has been on a payment plan (5k is a bit to shell out at one time). I had traditional braces as a teen, but I will not go through that hell again. My teeth shifted back after I stupidly let my wisdom teeth grow in—go figure, it was the massive fear of the dentist I got from having braces in the first place. Also, can one play sports with the trays in?

I was quoted $4,900 with an initial down payment of $1,000. Does anyone know if the prices are negotiable? I would imagine there is large markup as the materials seem rather inexpensive (i.e. made of plastic similar to a soda bottle). My thought is the initial cost covers the lab fee (and maybe some of the doctor fees) and the remaining is profit. Can anyone shed any light on this? You can email me at msin6 at hot mail dot com.

Invisalign is offered for $4000 by my dentist in Mesa, Arizona (suburb of Phoenix). Dentists are authorized to conduct Invisalign treatment and seem to charge considerably less than orthordontists. I am 7 months into the treatment and VERY pleased with the results.

I started Invisalign week ago. The first couple of days, my front teeth were sore after removing the trays to eat. I took tylenol only a couple of times. After a few days, the trays were easier to remove. In the beginning, they were painful to remove. My biggest problem has been that my tmj has been aggravated since i started wearing these trays. i hope that this is only temporar. for several years, my tmj seemed to be under control. i hope that this is not bringing it back. i've read several messages, and i have not seen anyone else complain about tmj or jaws poppling out of place. i'm wondering if i'm doing something wrong, but i can't ask my dentist until after the new year as the office is closed until then. Hope someone else out there has so advice. Thanks.

I posted awhile back that Invisalign has really aggrivated my very mild case of TMJ and I am very unhappy. I felt great before I started wearing the aligners. I might have to quit and take a big loss. Anyone else having this problem?

Boy, I had a laugh with this one I am halfway into my second set of trays. I did three different family dinners on saturday, christmas, and monday, I must say, usually around the holidays, I gain anywhere from 5-10 pounds, I have actually LOST 5 pounds since the aligners went in. I don't snack at all and have totally stopped drinking anything but water. I get up in the morning, eat a bwol of cereal, or some other breakfast, floss, brush, scrub the trays, rinse with ACT, then I'm set til lunch. Lunchtime, I eat a good lunch, brush, floss, rinse, and I am set til dinner. Then, I do it all over again at dinner... NO snacking, drinking water constantly...It sucked royally not being able to walk past the HUGE buffet spread and not be able to graze during commercials for the entire day.. I almost, ALMOST said, forget it, and actually considered keeping them out for the day, just so I could snack away.. But, common sense grabbed my by the brain and said " how MUCH did you spend on these??? How long have you waited to make the jump into braces, and why would you take a step forward and take 2 back???"" So, I am steadily losing weight, but, I will say this, I get a good charge out of knowing my teeth are moving, I almost welcome the pressure/tightness. I take an advil before bedtime on the friday night, the day of the week I am supposed to change them, put them in before bed, when I wake up, the pain is tolerable.. by the end of the next day, They're like a broken in pair of shoes and feel like the old ones. Occasionally, I have to sand the sharp spots with a nail file, but, My teeth feel like they have a protective coating on them, so when I do take them out, my teeth feel, naked.. quote: Originally posted by Jay: Christmas and Invisalign don't mix do they?! Hi, How bad would you say your teeth were? Did they have to do any slimming, or re taking the molds because yours weren't moving right? Was your experience "textbook"? Did they have to change anything in the middle of treatment?

$6200 is very steep!! I paid $3200 interest free for 18 months for both top and bottom and both were pretty bad off. You might consider traveling to the US for a dentist. You do not have to go to the dentist every 2 weeks. More than half the times, they hand you the next set of trays and see you in a month. I hope this helps.. I am impressed with the results!!Thomas

I don't know if this will help you, but I do not try to pull the invisalign out, I pop one corner off (which hurts, but i'm used to it now, I'm on tray #21) and then pop the other corner off. After that, pull down from the middle and they come off smooth..hope this helps...Thomas
