Johnathan, relax. You seem a bit uptight and a little annoyed. If wearing your aligners for 16-18 hours/day works for you, good for you. If somebody chooses to follow their Orthodontist's recommendation about wearing the aligners for 21 hours or greater works, then that is good too. Nobody is right or wrong here, given what works for them, but be careful. What appears to "work" now, may prove to be a wasted venture later. Think about it. You said your aligners hardly ever hurt you. Consider the analogy that the pain induced by wearing one's aligners is like the pain after a good workout. You know the difference between "good" pain and one that isn't. Perhaps movement is not occuring if you're not feeling pain. Just a thought. As for your other comments regarding working out. It seems a little harsh to say that women don't know the "pain" of working out nor the considerable stress involved. I will remind you that women and only women give birth...a pain you probably cannot fathom. So, please be mindful of those who view this site. Excellent response ROBINCT! Jonathan really needs to start listening to his orthodontist! If he doesn't it will be his loss (of teeth). Oh, and ROBINCT, if you are who I think you are, I'll be seeing you soon! Have a great day everybody! MELINCT

I just got mine yesterday! The trays came in after 3 1/2 weeks. 4000.00 dollars. I am in them for one year. I get the ZOOM whitening after the year. Does everyone get this? I do NOT like the buttons. They stand out like a sore thumb or like bubbles in the tray. I look like Im wearing a football mouth guard. I have top and bottom. I wanted to drink a daquiri last night and I did. I got them yesterday. Right after I did, I took them out and rinsed with mouthwash and put them back in. I cant take them out every time I drink a drink, but I can take them out to rinse after a snack or drink. I am going to talk to the dentist. The pain isnt very nice and my lips are dry.

Hi all, after reading your posts, I am getting confident about Invisalign. Now I have decided to try invisalign myself and would like to know which orthodontist to go for in the DC metro area (NOVA). Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like to know the average costs as well. I am looking at atleast 2 years of treatment which includes 3 tooth extractions (I had one consultation so far and he is charging me approx $8000 incl. diagnostics for treatment). Also please give me an estimate of how much the tooth extraction costs would be. Would really appreciate your replies. Thanks!

Yes, that's right. As part of my Invisalign treatment with my ortho I have to wear a permenant retainer for at least a year afterwards. They are small tooth coloured metal strips holding together both the top and bottom front 4 teeth, but behind the teeth so you cannot see them. I think that's a good idea myself and you can keep them in for life if you want.

Ok I am alil worried now. I am set to get mine in a month or so. My son and husband saw boxers on t.v. and were joking saying hey there's mom's invisaligns. I hope it doesn't look like that for real. I am also concerned about my final impressions on Monday. The first ones made me feel wierd when tring to breathe , Just the top ones. The bottums were easy. How did anyone else feel when doing the impressions.

The buttons bothered me at first too - I felt they were very noticeable but other people have told me they still can't tell there is anything in my mouth. In regards to the drink - I do the same thing. I'll go out and have drinks and just make sure to not swish it around my mouth (which I wouldn't do anyway) and I'll have a glass of water between each drink to help rinse it out and then I make sure to brush my teeth and aligners really good when I get home. It works out fine. The pain will go away - trust me and the dryness goes away too. I was drinking water like there was no tomorrow when I first had them - now I forget they are in half the time. You get very used to them - it just takes a while.

Glitter Star, The aligners aren't nearly as obvious as a boxer's mouth guard. It is true that if you have to have attachments (also called buttons) on your front top teeth, it makes your aligners somewhat more obvious. However, they're still not as apparent as any of the traditional braces. Tell the person doing your impressions about your concerns. There may be something they can do to make it easier for you. I didn't experience the same type of difficulty breathing that you did, but you may have a strong gag reflex. Or they may have used an impression tray that is too large for your mouth. Also, try to remain relaxed because if you are panicky, that will certainly increase the feeling of difficulty breathing.

I'm on my 11th aligners currently and I'm wondering what type of cleaning should I be getting from my general dentist? Is it the same scaling procedure I had to endure prior to the braces OR is it just your run of the mill regular tartar scraping, polishing, routine? Thanks

Hey Richie, I had to get all that unbearable scaling done, First the debridment, I went without any numbing stuff. Can anyone say OUCH!!!!! Then the scaling. I have to do polishing Monday with my final impressions. I am glad all the hard stuff is over. All my pics and x-rays are done so should be down hill from here.

As far the the retainer goes, I was told that I'd just need to wear a retainer at night (forever, I think) and it was included in the price. An extra bonus was that the dentist said she could have it made to double as a Night Guard since I have a tendancy to clench.

Not too bad, still need time to get use to.

After reading all the great posts I am wondering why so many had a "final" impression done? I only had one impression for my invisalign. Is it normal to have several impressions done for invisalign?

I am thinking about getting Invisalign Express. After reading the comments, I am going to think about it for few more months. Mainly, I did not realized how diffcult it might be to take them out. I only had a consultation with my dentist. The cost will be $2,500.00, Is that a reasonable price?

My ortho did a first impreesion for his personal review. He wanted to look over them to make sure there weren't any problems we might incounter. This was done with a material that only needed a min to set. Then he called me back after he had a few days to review them. I went today for the final impressions which is done with a purple goo material and takes five mins to set. It wasn't bad but it took 2 tries on the tops and 3 tries on the bottums to get a good impression. But I was willing to do as many as he needed to be sure I didn't have to come back at a later date to do it all over again. My ortho is a perfectionist , that is most likely why he did so many tries. He said my clinchec should be back in about aweek. I am so excited.

I have just had all of my impressions and photos taken. my dentist is a perfectionist also which is a good thing. I had to go back 3 times for impressions, because I have a hard time with them and he wanted them perfect. Now I have to wait about a month for the "preview". This forum has been great since I knew next to nothing about them before. I know one woman who has them. I am in my 40's and had braces once before. My only problem is that I am a "grazer" and worry that I will need to become very disciplined about wearing them and only eating 3 squares. I eat at very random times and I snack a lot, and eat in the car a lot too. This will be a big change for me.

my ortho just did all his tries while I was there yesterday. I didn't want to come back again until my ClinCheck, So I said I wanted to just stay until he got a good impression. He also said his invisalign rep was coming in today so he was going to hold off sending all my stuff out to have him look at my impressions just to make sure he was happy with it.

Hey, Phyllis. I too am a grazer AND eat in my car alot. But it's been OK so far. It does make me eat a little less often but there have been many times I've taken the aligners out without rinsing them and put them back in after I have a chance to rinsh & brush them out. No biggie.

well I had 2 gavitis and I ha dthem filled before starting the invisalign process. My ortho called today and said that his invisalign rep said that my molds were perfect, so they are now sendng them out. I am so excited. Also he said his last invisalign client got he clincheck back in a week. Which was only a couple of days ago. So I may be getting mine back soon. He said they have a fast response from invisalign on average. I can't wait to see how long my treatment is going to be. I'll stay posted.

Hi Sarah,I'm having Invisalign sometime soon. My ortho advised me to see a Periodentist first before beginning the process. I'm really glad I did as he said I should have a deep and thorough cleaning to prevent periodental gum disease - 2 x 1.5hr cleaning appts. I also have to have 2 crowns done before beginning the process.

Hi there. Ok, so I just got my invisalign aligners yesterday (after waiting for what seemed like forever...) and I know that it says 1/14 on the aligners I'm currenty wearing. Does that mean I'll only have to wear 14 sets in total? Because that would only be about 7 months of Invisalign, which doesn't seem nearly long enough. Am I wrong? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but my orthodontist wasn't too clear on it. I might have to give him a call if I can't figure this out.

I'd have thought your orthodontist would have been able to tell from the Clincheck how many aligners you needed. I always imagined the whole set were sent to the practice anyway...maybe not. Certainly sounds as though you only need 14...lucky you!! quote: Originally posted by dani85: Hi there. Me too!! I have only 10 sets for the bottom, and 24 for the top, and he says to change them every 2 weeks! Is that really enough time to change the teeth??And why 2 weeks instead of the 3 I always here?

Changing aligners every 2 weeks is actually more common than every 3 weeks with Invisalign. The Invisalign Web site even cites the 2 week time frame. An individual ortho may recommend 3 weeks to some patients, and this would be based on the patient's particular case. You may be thinking of OrthoClear which recommends 3 week invervals. I am on aligner 4 of 46 on the bottom and 38 on the top, so you are fortunate if you only have 24 or fewer. It's not unusual for a patient to go through their first set of aligners and then to follow up with additional aligners for refinement, so don't be surprised if your treatment runs longer than you are currently anticipating. As for whether 2 weeks is enough time to move teeth, the teeth have generally moved into place within a week or so (assuming you're wearing the aligners the prescribed 22 or more hours per day). After the first week, the aligners hold the teeth in place, allowing the bone and tissue to recover and regenerate. I've been advised to be sure I get plenty of calcium and be vigilent about dental hygiene to facilitate the healing process.

I just got my invisaligns yesterday (33 for the top, 20 for bottom). The removal of the appliance was difficult at first but I got use to it after the second try. It became easy to remove the following day. After reading this forum's comments/messages, I realized that my gum and tongue pain that I am experiencing now is normal (I'm assuming my bottom aligners are a little more rigid at the gumline compared to the top aligners). I think i'm going to try the dental wax and see if that works. I just have one question, do you guys experience pain in the back of your mouth--maybe ALL the farthest molars to the back? I need to know if this is normal or if it's my ingrown wisdom teeth that are causing me pain. My ortho didn't say I need to remove any teeth...initially?!?! I'm not in agonizing pain, I just feel "like ripping out my cheeks" annoyed!
