Root Canal Objectives and Procedures

Root canal procedures use many techniques.

Dentists can eliminate toothache pain and save teeth!

The two main objectives of root canal therapy are:

1. To clean out diseased tissue and bacteria from within the tooth.

2. To completely fill the internal hollow root.

There are many techniques and materials available to accomplish this. Some of these techniques allow the dentist to quickly, yet incompletely, fill the internal hollow root.

The technique most commonly used is Lateral Gutta Percha Condensation. This technique is more technically demanding but is the classical technique advocated by the American Academy of Endodontics. Regardless of technique, the root canal dental filling material should completely fill all roots of the tooth to tip of the tooth.

The skill level of the dentist determines the amount of time or visits required for root canal therapy. The Journal of the American Academy of Endodontics consistently shows comparable success rates of 95 percent for either single or multiple visit root canals therapies, assuming they are performed at the same skill level. A root canal specialist who can complete your root canal in one hour and with a high level of skill, however, commands a higher fee.
