Before and After: Corrective Jaw Surgery

Corrective jaw surgery is used to fix an overbite.

T. P. visited the office of an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with an overbite, characterized by an underdeveloped lower jaw (retrognathia). The condition made chewing difficult, and the patient was not happy with his "weak chin" appearance. This type of bite problem, or malocclusion, may be corrected by combined orthodontic braces and surgical treatment modalities. T. P. decided to have lower jaw surgery to treat his malocclusion and improve his appearance. In preparation for surgery, the orthodontist placed braces on his teeth to straighten them and to allow the upper and lower teeth to fit together in a more ideal position.

T.P. had his surgery performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. During the operation, small bone cuts were made with a micro-saw through incisions inside the mouth to allow the lower jaw to be moved forward. He was able to go home the following day, upper and lower teeth secured with rubber bands. Naturally, T.P. was ecstatic about his appearance.
