Receding Gum Case Study

Roberta visited the periodontal office complaining of upper cuspid sensitivity to hot and cold. She also described a progressive history of gum recession around the “neck” of this tooth and her concern about unsatisfactory aesthetics. She had habitually compromised her natural smile, embarrassed by the appearance of the elongated root.

The cleft above the root was clinically prepared to receive a periodontal graft to augment the defect. The cosmetic outcome and the relief of nagging sensitivity resulted in a happy and thankful patient. Most importantly, the progress of the defect was arrested and periodontal health was restored. The procedure was performed with a local anesthetic in a few minutes, with mild postoperative discomfort.

Gingival recession may be caused by toothbrush abrasion, anatomical defects or more advanced periodontitis. A thorough periodontal evaluation is necessary to ensure the appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
