Preventing Children’s Cavities with Low Sugar Snacks
- Peanut and Raisins Mix -- Put mixture in a paper cup for kids to carry around when playing outside.
- Celery and Carrot Sticks -- Used as dippers for peanut butter, cottage cheese, cream cheese or heated bean dip.
- Fresh Fruits -- Whole or cut, and served on a saucer (try cutting apples into wedges, making a pinwheel).
- Quarters of Hard-Boiled Eggs -- Deviled egg halves.
- Cubes of Monterey Jack Cheese -- Try with a handful of Wheat Thins®.
- Mozzarella String Cheese -- Buy in singles or in bags.
- Flavored Yogurts -- In moderation, with sugar added.
- Cottage Cheese -- Topped with sugar-free jam or sprinkled with nuts.
- Bologna Faces -- Make your own variations!
- Carrot Pennies -- Cut carrot into "coin" shaped slices.
- Fruit Juices -- V8® is excellent, especially low-sodium V8.
- Milkshake -- Use 8 oz. of milk, a banana or other fruit, one egg, a teaspoon of honey, two ice cubes and then whirl in the blender for one minute.
- Fruit Shake -- Use peaches, bananas, plums or apples. Try a 1/2 cup chopped, then add two ice cubes, one cup of plain yogurt and whirl in the blender for one minute.
- Butterfly Sandwich -- Peanut butter on wheat bread or cream cheese with sugar-free jam.
- Popcorn -- Pop before they come home from school!
- Unsweetened Cereals -- Check label for sugar content. Mix with milk and raisins, fresh fruit, or even low-sugar granola.
- Fruit Ice Pops -- Freeze in ice cube trays or an ice-pop maker. Use orange, grape or grapefruit juice, and add sticks when slushy. Freeze until hard.
- Seeds -- Unsalted peanut or sunflower seeds.
- Bread -- Slices of raisin bread topped with Jack cheese. Bread sticks or pretzels.
- Frozen Banana Pops -- Cut banana in halves, then put a stick in the cut end. Freeze for three hours or more. Dip in granola or chopped nuts, or serve plain.
- Fresh Strawberries -- Put on a toasted waffle spread with cottage or cream cheese. You can also spread cream cheese and sugar-free jam on a toasted English muffin half.
- Cheese Nachos -- Arrange cheese wedges on tortilla or corn chips on a cookie sheet. Slide under the broiler for a minute or two. Add apple slices and a glass of milk for a complete snack.
