How to Retain Dental Office Staff

That sucking sound you may be hearing is not the sound of the cleaning people vacuuming the carpets. No, it is likely the sound you hear from other businesses in every industry removing your employees -- good and bad -- from your workplace.

The labor crunch is on. “Just another shortage,” you say. Consider this: The 1970s oil shortage was caused by only five percent shrinkage. The current and projected labor shortage is 15 to 25 percent! The oil shortage was not a shortage at all but a deliberate act to withhold resources for political reasons. The labor shortage is purely a shortage of people (supply) for the number of positions available (demand).

Health care providers will be competing with employers from every industry imaginable, including retailing, high-tech, military and other health care workers.

This shortage will not only impact the clinical and administrative employee. The market for associates and partners is reaching critical mass. Not only are there more dentists looking to retire, cut back or expand, but also the debt load for recent and future graduates is making it unrealistic to afford to buy-in at market value.

The solution: Health care employers must create opportunities for employees they feel are fulfilling and better than any other opportunity available.

The top three reasons provided by dissatisfied employees time and time again is lack of training, no growth opportunity and no feedback from their supervisors. The time is now -- create a learning organization where your practice goal includes helping every employee become more competent. If you’re not ready to meet the challenge of retaining and developing your employees, you will end up with poor performance, high turnover, lower profits and a lot of stress.
