How to Build a Successful Dental Practice

Do you remember when you graduated from dental school? What were your ambitions? Did you misplace them or somehow lose them along the way? Unfortunately, for many that vision drastically changed.

Can you look at your practice today in the same light as when you entered the profession? Life is about change. Where you were three years ago in your practice is different from where you are now. That is the beauty and challenge of living in the present. We provide for the future by what we give today. Are you giving enough in your practice? What you give out has a way of coming back to you.

Building a prosperous practice doesn’t tend to happen in one upward movement. More often, it’s like a roller coaster rise and fall. There are periods when your production is less than par: Sometimes a treatment plan doesn’t come to fruition, or an unexpected equipment repair comes along at a time when you seem to be over budgeted for the month.

These periods have no particular significance and are of no real importance. They are part of the rhythmic cycle of human life. No account should be a “valley,” or seen as evidence that you are doing something wrong or heading in the wrong direction. A valley usually means only that you are progressing in the normal, up-and-down, human way. Maintain your disciplines, keep your vision and mission alive, hang on, and anticipate the next crest.

The question now arises, how do you regain your vision? How can you give back what you receive from the community? Why not take two needy patients a year into your practice and provide full treatment pro-bono. This simple act of charitable care will come back to you ten-fold whether in referrals, town recognition, or just a warm feeling of doing a good deed. Such acts reveal who we can be.

Meeting the demands of building a successful practice takes more than financial gratification. True prosperity is an attitude toward life. It is a way of living and thinking, not just things. When you find yourself obsessing with the nitty-gritty of the practice or allowing professionals or so-called experts decide how you are going to think, stop and reflect on your initial vision. Keep moving in the direction of your dreams and goals. Maintain harmony and balance in your wheel of life and enjoy the abundance waiting for you.
