Getting a Great Smile for the Wedding Day

Leah Ingram, prominent author and a regular contributor to bridal and women’s magazines, contacted me about a book she was writing. I was surprised and pleased to learn that her new book was to include both general and dental health. Good dental health is important because the last thing anyone wants is a broken tooth or toothache on his or her wedding day or honeymoon. Brides and grooms to-be may also want to have cosmetic dentistry performed prior to the wedding to look their best for friends and relatives and in pictures for years to come.

One good reason to see the dentist before getting married is that most dental problems tend to sneak up with little or no warning. That is why dentists usually recommend dental check-ups every six months. This way, a small cavity can be found and treated quickly, relatively inexpensively and with little disruption to a person’s life.

Left untreated, that same cavity will eventually cause a painful infection of the tiny nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth. The tooth will require a root canal to save it, and possibly a crown (cap) afterwards, both requiring more dental visits and more expense. Regular dental care is an important way to help prevent emergencies, and is especially important prior to major events, like getting married. Naturally, no one wants a dental emergency on his or her wedding day, but the situation can be far worse on the honeymoon. Many people travel to places far from home on their honeymoon, sometimes to foreign countries. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find acceptable dental care if an emergency arises while honeymooning abroad.

Cosmetic dentistry is another important consideration prior to getting married. Everyone wants to look and feel their best on their wedding day, and having an attractive smile to greet friends and relatives and for pictures is a must. The most requested cosmetic dental procedure is tooth whitening. Other procedures, such as white fillings, tooth shaping and porcelain veneers can help create a beautiful smile for the wedding and for the future.

Leah Ingram’s book, "The Balanced Bride," explores preparing the mind, body and spirit for the wedding day and for marriage. The well-written, easy-to-read book also includes the important, but sometimes overlooked area of dental health.
