Finding an Oral Surgeon
Consumers usually get referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon by their family dentist for the removal of wisdom teeth. As most readers know, oral surgeons also repair congenital defects and treat tumors related to the mouth.
As a consumer, one trusts that the specialist to whom they are referred offers expertise, experience, and safety. Oral surgeons have each done a minimum of a four-year residency, and many do additional studies.
In years past, many advanced dental programs added an option where, with some extra study, the D.D.S. or D.M.D. could also earn an M.D. degree. The idea that dentists could benefit from additional medical training isn't new. Vida A. Latham, D.D.S., M.D. did her studies in 1895 and was one of the early dually trained surgeons. Some consumers feel safer having an M.D. administering anesthesia, which is common with wisdom teeth extraction.
