Creating Positive Attitudes in Your Dental Practice
Someone once said to me that what I would become in five years depended upon the books I read, the television I watch, the movies I see, and the people I hang around with. Everyone knows that when in a relationship with a negative person, we have a tendency to not want to be around those people. Yet, when in the company of a positive, upbeat, self-confident person, we are automatically drawn to that person.
Think of the most successful person you know. Write down the characteristics that best describe that person. The characteristics you will describe almost always reflect attitude, not technical ability.
As Charles Swindall stated, “Life is 10 percent what happens to us and 90 percent how we react to it.” We truly are in charge of our attitude. How do we stay positive? How do we become that best person inside and out?
The following points are a list of priority items, that when put into place daily, weekly, monthly and annually, will provide satisfaction and improvement you can be sure will influence your career for the better.
- Choose to have a positive attitude. Always present a warm, positive outlook on life. Remember the adage, “When life throws you a lemon, make lemonade!” It is a conscious effort to replace negative, self-defending thoughts with positive, self-fulfilling thoughts. It takes hard work, determination, enthusiasm and self-control to be positive. Develop self-control.
- Set goals for yourself in three areas. For the next 12 months, set goals in these areas: social, family, financial, professional and self-attitude. When you have a passion, that will help you focus all your energies in reaching your goals. You must have a destination to have a journey, and success is the quality of your journey.
- Build an appreciation of yourself. Enjoy and be satisfied with your own uniqueness. Openly list your strengths and weaknesses and how to reach your potential.
- Show only a positive personality. Never speak of anyone or anything in a negative way. Remember that when you smile at another person, they usually will smile back.
- Learn from your defeat. Every failure carries with it the seal of an open door opportunity to improve the next time. “Learn from your mistake!” If something doesn’t work, figure out why and change it. We either grow from our mistakes or will always be a victim of our concerns.
- Trust your own judgment with a little faith on top. Walk the walk, talk the talk, believe in a morals systems and “Do unto others as you would like them to do to you!”
- Improve your non-verbal communication. Remember that 90 percent of your message is in your non-verbal communication. Seventy-five percent of your non-verbal communication is in your musculature. Read or listen to motivational speakers.
- Share your success. Make the commitment to be a more positive you. Remember that when others know of your plans they will encourage and support you. People like to be around positive people.
- Give praise often. Praising others builds morale and shows that you notice.
- Speak with enthusiasm and direction. Enthusiasm is infectious!
- Dress well. When you look good, you feel good about yourself -- and so do others.
- Talk about others and not yourself. People are drawn to those who listen with their ears and not their mouth.
- Hang out with positive people. Create a circle of friends and associates who bring you up, not down.
- Be a giver, not a taker. Always offer your best thoughts.
You will change your life and control your destiny through the application of these principles.
Remember, always give people more than they expect and you will receive more than you can imagine.
